I agree that there are a lot of manual jobs that need doing, but more of these jobs are becoming automated, robots will be doing all the crappy stuff soon. (until they turn on us
)
While many kids are much better off doing an apprenticeship than uni, they can still start at 18 after A levels or some other form of training rather than leaving at 16.
Many children are beyond saving and some are just stupid and obviously there are still many manual mind numbing jobs that need doing, but there are those that are just missing good parents who make them work (if it wasn't for my mum I probably wouldn't have done my homework), any way that the state can fill this gap to help them stand as much chance in the world as a better off child is good, it will lead to less disillusionment, crime etc.
