I suck at searching, didn't really find an answer, unless it comes under another area?

Oh well, just a Q about Sky TV - do you need a phone line for the TV package itself, or is that just for the BB they offer?

Reason I ask is that I get 50% off Sky through my employer, so decided to finally get rid of Swindon Cable/NTL Cable/Virgin Cable TV, and I recall someone telling me that you need a phone line – either they’re correct, liars or my memory sucks.

Cheers.

yes i believe you need to have te sky box connected to a working phone line for a minmum of 12 months on the off-chance you want some box office stuff i guess.

I believe the box phones Sky at various times to check everything is in order, well my SkyHD box does and its stated in the book you have to have a phone line connected at all times.

When I had Sky (for about 8 years) I never connected it to the phone line at all. They never said anything...

Thanks for the info guys.

Bugger, that means the mega cheap deal needs a phone line added to it – hmmmm, mind you, I could ring up Virgin and threaten to leave totally, get a phone added and a year of cheaper broadband, or free upgrade to 20 meg or whatever it is.

Seems to be the common thing they do when you say “I’m leaving for Sky”.

Hmmmmmm…..

I believe its for the first 12 months you have to have it connected, any way you still have to have a phone line regardless.

You need to have a phone line to order box office stuff, im not sure you actually have to have a phone line to be able to have sky.

You probably will find you have to have a BT phone line, Virgin I believe is cable?

Aha, Google gold:

Random Google hit; said:
well,
1)if it is a multiroom box then yes it must be connected
2)if it is a sky plus or hd box and you use remote record then yes it must be connected
3)if you want to buy games or movies ect then yes it must be connected
4)if it is a normal box and you dont want to buy games or movies then no it doesnt have to be connected.

if your must have it connected again (1 -3) then you dont need to call sky, just replace the wire and say no more about it.
but if you dont need it connected (4) then dont worry take out the broken wire and forget it.

Had a BT line about 9 years ago, never got used much, so it was cancelled.

I only took out BB with NTL, mind you, they keep pestering via the post, may have to take them up on the offer.

The subsidised box price sepends on you leaving it connected to a phone line for 12 months, if you don't you have to pay full price

May be quite expensive then mate as you will have to be reconnected and don’t BT charge a bomb for this?

I get 50% off of everything, something to do with a sector of the company being an authorised Sky installer, or something like that, I just saw "50% off" and though cha ching :D

Right, so plan of action for tomorrow – ring Sky and see if they have a problem with me not having a line first, then ring Virgin and cancel the Cable TV and ‘mention’ I plan to leave them entirely; hopefully this will lead to free phone and either a reduction in my BB price or a free upgrade :D
