Dawn of War opinions?

Great games - very slick.

Personally I'm more of a fan of the large-scale strategic RTSs (like supreme commander or sins of a solar empire), rather than the small-scale tactical RTSs like DoW. But having said that, I enjoyed DoW and the 3 expensions very much, with the exception of winter assault.

I'd recommend them.

Its good, but the swarming tactic works far too often and the scale is wrong for Warhammer 40k - you're lucky to have more than ten squads at once. The vehicles are too small and for some reason can't run over infantry..

Personally I think DoW is the best RTS there is, but then I did used to play WH40K in the 90s so I can follow the lore etc and appreciate the cutscenes etc.

As mentioned it is relatively small-scale, with most races having a relatively low squad cap. It's more about the tactical engagements rather than some grand overall stategy.

Dawn of War Anthology is probably the best pack to go for as this contains the first two expansions. Soulstorm is very good but probably not worth buying until you've tried the earlier, cheaper games to see if you like them.

Very good game, better than Command and Conquer, cannot wait for Dawn of War 2. I would recommend the first one and the pack if you can get it cheap, i wasn't so keen on the expansions but other people enjoyed them.

Good in it's day but it's old now and it's very unbalanced online, and there's company of heroes now which is 10 times as good.
I have two copies of dow 40k one I bought and one came with company of heroes.

greate game, much cheaper than paying for 40k, that stuff cost a small fortune tho is just as fun as the game. best playing on a lan

Dark Crusade is the best incarnation of DOW bar none... and there are mods out ther ethat will make your eyes and ears bleed from their sheer aweesomeness.

DOW is the best RTS i've played in the last 10 years, and if you have a mate that plays it then you will lose countless hours to multiplayer...

Why avoid the expansions?!? Dark Crusade is simply superb, Soulstorm is ok but a bit unpolished and Winter Assault's single player is quite good

People like me find story lines in game immensely important, the original DoW had a great storyline backed up with what was at its time groundbreaking gameplay. Winter assault had an average storyline with identical gameplay and dark crusade was yet again more of the same in terms of gameplay (albeit with a really clever territory system) without any storyline to speak of at all.

To put it in perspective, storyline is so important to me i played dark crusade for a day and felt so unfulfilled by constant battles with no storyline fix between each that i just gave up. It's still sat on my shelf :(.
