If you use for example the Pocketgps database on a TomTom you can customise the settings so it warns you of the camera type distance etc. Not had a play with them yet on the Navigon.

I went into Halfrauds the other day looking at the TomTom ONEXL and found out Garmin charge £59 for map updates not £80 so not too bad actually!

The guy at the entertainment counter said Garmin are better than TomTom every time.

So there you have it.

!

The only thing putting me off TomTom is the loo of the map display, it looks so cheap and tacky. By comparison my Garmin looks much nicer and detailed. It also tells you the next road or junction/exit you are approaching when in normal map mode which the TomTom did not.

Bet they told you that the Navigon is rubbish as well?? Its almost as funny as when the purple shirt brigade try to talk technical.

I've had my Navigon 2100max now for just over a week and am really impressed, it got good maps, is pretty quick, the TMC and Text to Speech work well and for £99 + the updates it great. Probably gonna sell the TomTom 530T now...

Not sure on that one. Garmin are better than TomTom in some respects but really its just what you are used to. They both do the same job but are set out differently.

  • Garmin battery life is longer
  • Garmin maps are slightly better as they create the maps by getting people to drive the roads, as oppose to TomTom who use satellite pictures. This way, some small roads are missed out on the TomToms
  • If your Garmin unit dies, it can usually be replaced over the counter, whereas with the TomToms they are usually sent back to get repaid.

:)

TomTom is looking dated now, but it still works well and the UI is one of the best I've used.

Personally I hated the Garmin UI, and whilst the routing was ok I just found it a PITA to use.

Garminn and Navigon share many things in common inc the mapping system!

I find the Navigon series has a more professional business looking interface and map layout though. Garmin looks like it's more end user orientated than professional orientated but it's quick and easy to use especially if you need to quickly make changes whilst on the move.

They had BECKER units on display too and the guy pretty much snarled at it LOL.

One thing I never understood about tomtom is why they don't give a dashboard disc? you're pretty much forced to stick it on the windscreen. I'd rather be given the option than forced to use the windscreen!

Thats reality view in that picture and it works really well. It also has a second function called lane assist pro. That displays a road layout showing what lane you need to be in to carry on your journey, so if the road splits with 2 lanes going left and 3 right it puts a diagram up with highlight arrows showing which lane you should be in.

I think thats slightly miss leading as they don't solely use Satellite imaging and haven't done for quite so time. The maps between Teleatlas and Navteq as long as you are comparing like for like revisions are near as dammit identical.

I suppose you could always buy one separately if you did have a TomTom. But it seems silly that all satnav manufacturers don't have them standard.

eBay has them for a fiver which is where I got my 2nd as the first that came with the Garmin was on the old car.

Anyhoo, anyone using the Navigon can you confirm when searching by postcode does it ask you for door number too ?

Ive know of a few occasions where TomToms have missed small roads where the Garmin maps haven't.

I mean in everyday use the TomTom maps will be more than adequate. I'm referring to small dirt tracks. Tracks to farms etc. So nothing that the public would use day to day.

No, but you can use say the 1st 4/5 digits to narrow the search and just enter the road. It has predictive input so if for example I enter co11 1 and then start typing the street with p then the characters are blanked which don't make a road name when I enter the next character it predicts the road from that so in this case pine close appears. I can then enter the house number or a crossing point and it will navigate to the door and tell you which side of the road the house is on. It also does multiroute journeys etc.

Sorry just to add that you can use all 7 digits and it'll take you to either the middle of the postcode or you can show on the map and navigate to that point

I had a S90i and replaced it with the tomtom 530t and now the Navigon 2100 max, wouldn't have Navman again it was a bit flakey and felt cheap.
