Sat NAv

Thats why the navigon 2100max with the fresh maps upgrade is so good value. You can also add things like text to speech and tmc with just an upgrade from the website.

Yeah, I was looking at these too. But they seem to suffer from a fwe problems getting GPS fixes from the reviews I've read. Plus the keyboard isn't QWERTY...

it may not be qwerty but it disables the characters as you get further thru the word/postcode etc. My 2100max will be here tomorrow and I'll compare it to my 530T

Yeah, I've seen a few video clips of it I'd still prefer qwerty though. You'll have to post here what you think of it when it arrives.

What the crap, how can these companies charge so much for a simple map update? it's just a map....

Yes charging for it is fine however £40 for an update is not fine. That's half the cost of the device itself.

I think you get the first 12 months map updates free with Tomtom? Might be worth checking.

With a new Tom Tom you get to use the "Newest Map Guarantee" within 30 days of buying your device.
This covers units getting stuck on shelves and new maps being released.
So basically you buy your Tom Tom, after 29 days run the "Latest Map Guarantee" and you'll get the latest version of the map.

This is your last free official update from Tom Tom, all map upgrades will now cost you.
You can download "community changes" - some Tom Tom units (like my 730) support changes made by the community and these can be downloaded for free.

Sure the new map upgrade costs half the price of a new device.
A Windows OS UG costs half the price of the full OS.
If you don't like paying for the map upgrades then just buy the new device - but I think I'll just pay for the updates at some point in the future.
I wouldn't buy each and every new map anyway - roads seriously don't change around that often.

I'm just toying with the idea of getting a Tomtom to replace my Garmin since a lot of new roads round here and on route to various family member's houses around the southern end of the country have been changed so instead of paying £80 to Garmin I might as well get a new GPS device with a few more features bunged in and sell the Garmin on ebay or something.

What's the most comparable Tomtom to the 200W Garmin? I am looking at the TomTom OneXL widescreen ?

Right guys, Iam after a sat nav. Hardly know anything about them, so.

Traffic updates, I take it the sat nav just tells you where there are traffic jams etc?
Bluetooth, whats this used for?
MP3 player, how does this work?

Sat Navs have Mp3 Players these days?

I assume traffic updates would be a pay per month contract type thing?

Traffic update come in 2 forms, either TMC updates over the radio which have a one time subscription fee, usually included in the cost of the device to recieve them (TomToms RDS-TMC antena for example). TomTom also have a traffic system which uses a GPRS connection through a mobile to collect data. This does carry a monthly subscription fee.

Bluetooth is usually used to provide handsfree calling to a mobile and also in TomToms case the ability to connect to their data servers for various services.

MP3s are either played through the onboard speaker(s), a line out cable or some device have a FM transmitter which allow you to tune your radio to a particular station and then listen to the commands and music from the phone through the car stereo.

Hope that explain it.

Many do these days, AFAIK it is available with TomTom, Navman, Garmin and Navigon products. Although, the options of having them updated vary.

Speed camera warnings are pretty annoying, as you approach the speed limit and if there's a speed camera location on that road you will get BING! and a warning displaying so on my Garmin. I never get caught by speed cameras though so just turn this off :p

I use CoPilot7 on my phone and I get a smallish icon on the screen with my current speed and distance to the camera. It's actually quite good!

Plus, I don't use sounds on my satnav, so "BING"s don't annoy me :p
