What ever happened to the health bar?

im undecided. counterstrike - the best fps ever doesnt have regen.
but then again i like the idea behind halo3, you have shield and health, health regenerates slower and can be the deciding factor in beat downs. but thats is halo3 worked how its supposed to but its so unbelievably badly coded that nothing works, 99% of bullets dont register and its generally an absolute failure. but if it worked the way it was meant to i think i would prefer that to the cs way of doing health.
obviously ill always prefer cs as it requires more skill as opposed to halos 99.9% blind luck + connection.

In CoD2 (the last game I played mp with regen) it worked because it still took very little to kill someone with full health. 1 Rifle bullet, or 2 assault rifle bullets killed them.

It's precisely because of nade spam the dev's of CoD added regen. Even in "high skilled" ladders for CoD1, nubs were racking up the points by practising for hours/days/weeks/months "tactical nades" where they could pinpoint exactly where and how to throw a nade to land at an exact spot, meaning they didn't need any skill at all to eliminate the opponents. This still happened in CoD2, but thanks to the regen it meant the nade had to be absolutely on target or it didn't work.

In general I prefer it. If you want to finish someone, you need to go head on and get on with it. None of this pussyfooting around scratching them a hundred times.

^I know what you mean in that it promotes aggressive play in terms of chasing down opponents (since if you don't, they can regen), but equally it works the other way. It promotes running away when you are under fire because you know that all you need to do is hole up for a while and you'll be back to full strength in a matter of seconds. Whereas with healthbars, there is no such benefit from crawling into a dark hole somewhere, you have to seek out a health pack / armour / medic or whatever. Which adds a tactical element to the game.... if you know your opponent is weak, you might try and figure out where on the map he is going to go to stock up and head him off.

Regen is better fullstop, but only in games when you have very high weapon damage or low health as in Hardcore in COD4.

Give reasons as to why you consider it good, in many pc gamers eyes (especially for multiplayer fps) its doing nothing but introducing an element thats associated more with console shooters thus nerfing the pc version down to that level.

I consider it good because, firstly it's more 'fun' which is what games are about imo. It's fun because it keeps the game at a faster pace and you can't just shoot someone and then just wait until they come back from behind that rock because you know they have lower health.

Health packs restoring your health are just not my cup of tea and why are console shooters so below you?

In an ideal world i would have a health bar and when your shot you would take damage and start bleeding thus losing HP. Then you could pick up health packs and stop bleeding and then start being able to regen, this would take away the ludicrousness of health packs magically restoring you to full HP.

And hiding behind a wall for 3 seconds to heal yourself is anyway less ludicrous?

The bleeding system has been done before in games like day of defeat, was something that never seemed to stick around though. =/

A combination of the two would be good imo.
Regen only upto 10-20% health, and only health packs can get you back to 100%.
