What ever happened to the health bar?

In multiplayer it forces you to keep the game running at a fast pace, otherwise you get people camping and endlessly throwing grenades slowly grinding eachother's health down.

Boring.

As opposed to cod4 grenades which have the killing radius of a tactical nuke in most cases. And did nothing but turn the game into a grenade spam fest in certain maps and modes.

I hate regeneration, it usually makes the game into a sham. Wounding someone counts for **** all. Just shot a guy in the back with an anti tank sniper rifle? Well hes prone behind that crate gaining all his health back.

Yup, seems devs seem content to port games these days and leave the console elements intact on the pc. Wounding is literally non existant in something like cod4, if you're not right on top of someone after hitting them a couple of times your hits count for nothing which is retarded. All they need to do is get a bit of distance for the 3 or 4 second wolverine routine, wheras in something like cod1 you were never assured of finding a health pack.

I quite like the way Far Cry 2 is going to be handling it. It's a regeneration system, but you're basically unable to run about and fight as you're locked into an animation of your character pulling bullets out of himself or bandaging himself up. Maybe it'll become the norm in a little while. :)

I liked the healthpacks in BF2. If you were shot, you could run and carry a medipack whilst recouping your energy bar. Only problem is it's sods law that your hiding trying to regenerate life holding a medipack and some **** jumps out and nabs you.

It's much easier than that, you could just drop a bag and insta heal. You're describing the sandvich in TF2, which is in this posters opinion absolutely brilliant :)

OM NOM NOM

Regen seems like a really bad idea in multiplayer to me, but I can see the appeal in SP. Basically it helps to avoid situations where you've got a saved game with very low health and no way to top it up.

As mentioned the Halo/Airborne methods are quite good compromises.

I do love it when people say regen is unrealistic...yet find people being healed from rockets and machine guns by boxes lying around just fine.

Must admit I am missing a shooter with healthpacks - might be time for a COD:UO session shortly!

I did like the MOH: Airborne / Riddick health system, would work much better in multiplayer where you know at least shooting the guy did *something* to help your cause.

Probably my favourite is the Americas Army method.

A headshot is a headshot, you die.
Any other hit starts you bleading. If a medic heals you quick enough, you will be fine. If he doesn't you will continue bleeding until your run speed is affected, and you may even bleed to death. You can slow the bleeding by going prone and not moving too much.

Regen is just easier for Devs to balance I think. Plus it has a habit of making games easier/more casual I think, which seems to be the way games are headed.

Plus it keeps you in the action, no searching around in hidden nooks for health packs. The only game that I've liked health bars in is Half Life 1 and 2, they seem very well done and fit well with the universe.

I know this is in the Windows section, but for me the best C&C game was Retaliation on the PS via link cable. Not a big fan of C&C, but playing this against a mate was awesome. Especially when compared to the PC at the time of 56K multiplayer...I don't think I even had the net back then TBH!

I much prefered Total Annihilation though.
