If you like countless others to be found vociferously complaining about their Mybook being an unreliable piece of garbage then you'll be pleased to know that a firmware update is available from Western Digital's support site.

I've had it installed a couple of hours and it seems ok. Time will tell but i'm really hopeful I don't have to RMA this.

edit: this doesn't apply to all models, as I previously thought. In my case the studio model has an update.

More info please, like Model and interface. :)

I don't see what it can fix as its basically an internal HDD inside mines and as I use the ESATA its not going through the USB Controller in the Caddy.

Mines died but it was the actual HDD (bad sectors).

From what I can tell it's the complete mybook range has firmware added this month. Mines the 'studio' 500gb version and so far so good it seems ok.

Previously it would spin down all the time and not spin back up, sometimes it would even lock up my system (imac). If I was lucky switching it off and on would work ok, other times I had to switch between usb and firewire as have many many people on the net.

Previously wasn't there as I looked a couple of weeks ago. Isn't yours under warranty?

Yes, filed for a RMA last week and sent today after Freezing HDD (removed from Caddy)to get 100GB of DATA back.

Im not impressed after seeing inside caddy.

I cant see any firmware, can you point me towards them ?.

I have a 500GB ES Premium (the older one with Round Light/Button).

Yes they will never know as unlike some guide on Google, my model did not have a screw disguised with black paint that needs removed.

All I had do was pull the rubber Trim from all round it off, then slip a flat driver into both sides and press the lock latchs and slide housing apart.

To rebuild I simply had to press the rubber Trim into place on the lip of the housing and then slip both parts together (actually easier than taking apart). ;)

There is not 1 mark on it, its as good as the day it came out the box new. :)

I actually read all there info on site about warranty and voiding it, and it all pointed to tampering with the actual HDD not caddy and this was the data sheets for the My Book.

There is no way anyone would loose their DATA for the sake of removing it from the caddy incase it simply is the caddy control circuit that is knackered and the companies they point you too would charge you £100's for recovery.

Sorry, looks like it's only some of the range. Which have you got?

You confident you'll receive replacement after opening the case?

I spoke to WD support before getting a MyBook World II about this very thing, and apparently yes you're warranty is fine even if you open the case and replace HDs (obviously your new HDs won't be covered under the same warranty). Annoyingly, though, change out that noisy fan and then your warranty is void.

So what we need is an external hard drive that:

i) doesn't break
ii) doesn't look like crap
iii) is cheap

What about these iomega discs. They look good, they're not cheap, but do they break?

Having had bad experiences with western digital and seagate, i'm kinda disillusioned. Having said that, this firmware update seems to have made things right so far.

hmm, looking at your location, I don't think my mum will be too pleased when i try and deliver it..
