What happens when you microwave a cup of milk with a spoon in it...

Tried to make warm milk to help me sleep, and left the spoon in the cup.

Now the microwave won't heat anything, have I killed it? :(

I set it for 1min 30secs, and walked away to the toilet. Came back to a nasty smell of sparks.

The third one I've murdered in about 6 months!

eheheh
a few weeks ago, a lady my neighbour , knowing that I repair PC's, asked me to see her microwave (a cheaper brand) that was dead (I think she left inside it a aluminum pan) I opened it and saw a piece ,like that one below, burnt - I exchanged it for a new one, and the microwave is working as new:)

Moved into a house recently that has an older microwave combination thingy (it grills and ovens as well). It has a metal shelf in it that is fine to leave in while microwaving - it only sparks if it touches the sides as opposed to sitting on the (still metal) rails. Can't work out how this is possible but then it doesn't take much to confuse me :P

Anyone want to find out if you can melt hair in the microwave? Might need a little water, dunno, probably wouldn't work at all. Someone confirm this :D

Our microwave manual says to heat liquids with a metal spoon in so they don't flash boil when you take them out.

Some microwaves are all right with metal.

AFAIK you can only flash boil liquid if it's super heated, which can only happen if it's really pure water.

it has something to do with getting it to petty much the point where it's temperature stops rising, as all the energy is going into making it vaporise, but then stopping it while its there, then the energy from you moving it provides it with the jolt it needs to vaporise.

* note this is something i remember reading a long time ago, file may be corrupt*

Yep that kills most microwaves.

Except for ours, ours is fancy, it tells you to put a spoon in mugs of things :p

Sorry it's been a while guys...

Mum came downstairs to find me sat on my laptop at the kitchen table, tapping away, and after a few seconds noticed the note.

She read it, and then read it again, then turned to me with a sort of blank / curious expression on her face.... then called me a ****head and left the room :p

shes not happy, not happy at all.

Lol i thought it was common sense not to put metal in a microwave?

me too ... i am actually surprised some people seem to have no problem microwaving metal? unless you all have big daddy bear wooden spoons?

ach weeeel.... you'll only get arcing, if the spoon was too close to one of the sides of the microwave (or the top) however it is possible that you burnt out the magnatron
