im after some advice about buying a 4870 basically, as im a little concerned my dual core 4200+ at stock speeds will limit the gfx card?
would i be better off upgrading the rest of my machine instead or would the new gfx card work ok with what i have currently?

A 4870 would give you very good performance no doubt about it, but personally for that system I would spend a bit less and put the rest towards a new PC.
An 8800GT can be had for about £70 now and would go well with your current system.

Whilst you may not get the full potential of the card, it would definitely still give you improved frame rates over your current card.

If its an AM2 rig you could also get a cheapish 5400+ to 6000+

thanks for all the comments guys.
i decided to go with a 3870 in the end and maybe look forward to upgrading in the future with cpu/mob and ram etc also.
just installing now, hope its an ok upgrade :p

I've got a 1900xt too except I have a core 2 duo e6600 running at stock with xp and 2gb ram. Was thinking of getting a 4870. Would I be better off waiting and upgrading cpu etc as well?

I only game at 1024 or sometimes 1280 on my 22" iiyama crt but may get a widescreen lcd later on, so I'd need to run higher resolutions like 1900 etc. Would the 6600 seriuosly hamper performance at that res?

Your E6600 wouldnt hold you back at all. Would be a perfect match for a 4850 / 4870 imo. If going for a larger LCD then the 4870 would be wiser.

You will see a nice gain depending on res.

But a small clock on the 4200 say @ 2.6-2.8ghz will be fine for all current games.

Upgrading can be as cheap as chips though! I'd get a nice new setup on the cheap an use an 8800gt or something, it'll run almost everything still!

I'll add my 2p worth

My housemate had a s939 4000+ setup with a 7800GTX which he upgraded to a Q6600 / 4GB RAM system but keeping the graphics card. There was a good increase in peformance, he said that the framerate was more even with the min fps being much higher than before.
