Well I can't see you getting anywhere near 3.6ghz on the x6 multi (you'd need 600mhz FSB), but if you can get over say 450mhz then you can rule out the motherboard (I would expect an X48 board to be able to take a 45nm quad to ~470mhz FSB).

Remember to lower the RAM ratio so that you're not pushing it out of spec as you raise the FSB.
 
Ok cob.

I tried 450fsb with a 6 multiplier and 1081 ddr speed and it failed 4/5 intel burn tests.
Looks like it is my chipset that is limiting me?

If thats the case, why the hell did I pay so much for a Rampage Extreme board that overclocks so well?

Is there any way to jack my cpu speed up but keep the fsb relatively low?

How high did you set the NB voltage? It'll likely need to be near 1.6v for getting over 450mhz. Will probably need FSB Term to be edging 1.35v too.
 
It'll likely have whacked it up high, but I would try setting them manually anyway.
 
Have you tried dropping the CPU multiplier to x6 to see if it will go over 425mhz? That's the easiest way of telling if it's the board or the CPU that's holding you back.

I thought that the Q9550 was multiplier locked... is it not?
 
Ok, I set the NB voltage to 1.4. It still says 1.3x like in the picture but it passed the 5 intel burn tests, which it never has done before.

Would the voltage be 1.4 if I set it even if it reads lower in the asus apps.?
 
when talking to w3bbo he had it on good authority (from an asus engineer) that P45 chipset is 65nm (compaired to 90nm for P35) and therefore higher board voltages will hinder and not help your clock.. I assume the same goes for the X48 chipsets

You shouldnt need more than 1.3/1.4v NB voltage for 500FSB and anything higher than 1.4v NB voltage will hinder stability not help it..

At high FSB 400ish+ you will need to keep your VTT (FSB Termination Voltage) above the NB voltage but never more than .1v i.e. NB @ 1.3v FSBTv no higher than 1.4v

Also it might be worth running prime95 so you can see which core(s) are failing and increase the strength on the RefVoltage
 
X48 is 90nm and needs high NB voltage for high quad-core FSB. To say that it will do 500mhz on a 45nm quad at 1.3-1.4v NB is quite ridiculous tbh. VTT needs to be kept below 1.4v, and PLL needs to be kept below 1.6v.

I did say I wasnt sure if it was the same for x48 :p touchy tonight :D
 
Yea I did your suggestion yesterday. I set it to 440-450, can not remember exactly which one and dropped the multiplier down to 6 and the memory speed to like 1024.
It still was not any more stable. I did not up the nb voltage with it though, I left it on auto. Like I have said a couple times, I set the nb voltage manually to 1.4 but my apps and bios still say it is staying at 1.32. I dunno whats up with that.
 
It's probably just under-volting. Does it still read 1.32v if you set it to say 1.45v?
 
yes sir. I set it to 1.4 and it reads about 1.32. Its pissin me off lol.
Not sure why it would do that. Have not tried 1.45 but I can if you want.
