Boris plans Heathrow replacement

Or, perhaps we are too dependant on Heathrow as it is. Yes, even though I work there, I dislike it...
Don't get me wrong, I hate the airport. I hate the noise, the smell of aviation fumes, etc. But thinking that an island full of runways is a sufficient replacement is a joke. Infact the mere fact that aircraft take off from LHR is not even significant in my eyes, due to all the extra businesses surrounding the airport, that don't even care about flight.

Frankly, this is a daft idea. Passengers aren't the only thing to consider, Boris.

I only think it's a daft idea to implement the transition with such a short space of time as quoted in the article. Heathrow needs to be replaced or at the very least, supplemented by another airport eventually. Whether that be 20, 30 or 50 years away, it is inevitable.

If the UK wants a world leading air travel hub, they can't polish the turd that is Heathrow. They're going to have to start from scratch.

that wont be a problem, there possible time scale is ridiculous and only included to sale news.

Stop any expansion to Heathrow and build another airport. Closing Heathrow will kill the local area.

I don't understand why they want to close Heathrow. It would make perfect sense to keep it in place as a cargo and transatlantic hub only whilst moving all the short, medium and eastbound long haul traffic to a new airport in the Thames estuary.

Why shift the entire load when you can balance it between two airports? It would be idiotic to close Heathrow altogether considering the investment that has been pumped into the infrastructure to support it in recent years.

It would also introduce another player into the London airport authority pool. Competition would certainly be healthy.

No, it means the locals will have to diversify instead of depending on the airport for everything. It will also get rid of the terrible road layout and reduce congestion.

Was there not a German airport which moved 40 miles 'overnight'?

Everybody else seems to have a lets see how we can do this attitude.

We seem to have this lets not even bother looking at attitude.

Someone commenting on the Times' article suggested expanding Manston airfield which already has a long runway and isn't far from Boris's proposed site.

IIRC the site isn't big enough to house 4-6 3000m+ runways with the required terminal space.

I have heard on the rumour mill at work that Manston may be used to alleviate the pressure on the other London airports during the 2012 Olympics.

Read this article this morning - sounds like 'Boris Island' could be a good idea. Heathrow was a '50s planning error and east of London has much better infrastructure than the west - only problem is much of that infrastructure is already at capacity. Plus I'm not sure we can afford it.

It was dubbed Boris Island in the Sunday Times.

The article in the OP makes it out to be the idea of Boris as well, which is wrong. I think his proposed 'proposals' are giving everyone the idea that he thought this up.

We must reduce our emmisions - tax highly high co2 cars blah blah

Lets make a new airport!
In the long run it'll probably do wonders for reducing emissions. At present, aircraft inbound to Heathrow during a busy spell frequently hold (fly around in circles) for up to 20 minutes and sometimes as long as half an hour. That's tens of tonnes of fuel being burnt for each aircraft waiting on it's turn to land. If the airport has the appropriate ground infrastructure, holding would become a thing of the past.
