2008 Singapore GP - Race 15/18

Ive only been watching F1 from start of this season and love it :D. Is this first time they done a night race? will the whole track be lit up or are the cars fitted with lights? They would have to pi$$ about with weight then though wouldn't they?

hopefully the night will mean a cool/cold track giving the drivers hell for tyre temperature and we see some racing/spins

Does anyone know if the teams have done any night testing anywhere?

I recall there being some testing of the lighting somewhere at some point that some of the drivers were involved in. It was only a couple of corners somewhere and I think any driving was done in road cars.

EDIT: It was a last year's US GP and only the safety car was involved from what I can tell.

The air temperature in Singapore at 8pm is still 28-30C, the track temperature isn't going to be huge but it's still going to be reasonable, probably no worse than the early European season races.

I would assume that the track temp is really dependant on the amount of sun, and there won't be much in Singapore! MotoGP had a night race this year and the track temp was in the low teens so i would expect something similar.

I'm a bit dubious about this track. After the abject failure of Valencia to provide anything in the way of good racing, I'm concerned that this might go the same way if it stays dry even with it being held at night. If it's wet....hoo boy. Night-time, so it won't dry much, and temperatures will plummet making the tyre situation very dicey indeed. Especially for Ferrari, who seemingly struggle to retain heat rather more than McLaren.

We need a controversy-free race. But I fear we'll not only get that, but a boring one as well if the track proves to be another Valencia.

oooooh i never thought of that. wet @ night will be no good at all for tyres. Plus the lighting will loose effect through the spray? could be quiet dangerous.

hmm i hope it stays dry! lol.

I dont know if street circuits suit modern F1 really. I used to love watching montoya @ Long beach (Cart) sliding his car between the walls with no fear. F1 is different, drivers want tons of run off areas to make it safe for them to do silly moves. The Cars dont work either, due to all the stuck on tat.

Maybe next year Valencia and Singapore will be good GP's, but i agree with JRS... this is gona be a snooze fest if dry, or outright dangerous if its wet. Bridgestone should be allowed to take more extreme wets this weekend because in a way the tyres are gona have the same problem they had a monza.

ITV have a gallery up with some shots of the track - http://www.itv-f1.com/photo.aspx?im_id=50225

This pic caught my eye, it's the part of the track that goes under the grandstand - how narrow?!

Isn't the bridge surpose to be the narrowest part if so? Then damn good luck to the drivers.

Me too, although with the track as narrow as it is, I'm leaning towards complete bore.

However, the one caveat to that would be if a few people start sticking in the barriers. Then it could get interesting ;)

Maybe Bernie will create his own team and bring back Ralf and Ide, so they can um... create some crashes :p
