e5200 or e7200?

Hi all,

I'm looking to go dual core for as cheap as possible, while gaining the most performance for my money. Currently I'm running:

S939 Asus Sli Deluxe
A64 4000+ @3GHz
2GB RAM
Ati 2900GT 256mb @750/2000
Asus 19" @ 1440x900

The 2900 is surprisingly quite good and will serve me a little longer, and I think my CPU, mobo and RAM is what's most in need of an upgrade.

I've been looking at the e5200 and e7200 as both are 45nm and i'll be looking to O/C the nuts off it :D, the question is - which 1 is better value for money, in terms of price and overclocking potential? I intend to buy an artic cooler 7 as have heard good things also.

I've seen the e5200 going for just under £60 while the e7200 can be had for £80.

Can anybody recommend the best mobo and RAM which would suit either of these also, taking into consideration lowest price and overclocking potential. I'll be looking to spend less than £160-170 if at all possible for a cheap boost in performance.

Opinions welcome, thanks very much!

P5Q series are awesome boards. Combine that with either of the two chips!

You decide whether the extra 2MB of cache on the e7200 is worth the 25 quid price difference. It isn't in my opinion. :p

The difference is only 1MB. If you can hit 3.6GHz+ with the E5200 then I'd go with that.

Go for the E5200 as it can overclock higher than the e7200.

And where did you hear that ? Because thats *rubbish*.
Anyways, for your current setup i will just slap 2nd hand 4200/4600 x2 for around 25-30quid and there you go. Great increase for no money.

If you really want to make a serious upgrade then you will have to be looking at cost of about 400quid which will be:

E8400
P45 Mobo
4GB of good PC6400/PC8500
ATI HD4850.

Lower than that I wouldnt bother upgrading.

E7200 + cooler + mobo + ram will cost you about 260-300quid and you're looking at next not much of an upgrade in comparison to your current spec with 4xxx x2.

Get the £5200. The 7200 isn't worth it, and neither are the low-end E8000 series chips. Either get the cheap 5200 and clock the nuts off it, or go for a quad-core.

The E5200's can get as high as 4Ghz. I have one on the way (not from here though ;)) for my second pc. However, i am going to stick it in my main rig and see how far i can get under water cooling. I will do a load of benchies comparing it directly to my E6600 and also some comparisons to a E4300, Q6600 and a E8500. Hope to be posting by the end of next week.

I just want to smugly say I found an e7300 mispriced at fifty quid the other day: that's my new CPU! Hoping to get this bad boy up to 4Ghz on a P5Q-E. Nice neat 10x multi 'n' all!

Would love to see those benches pastymuncher.
Did you buy it on line or in store mull? (Asking because in store they could always remove it from stock for 24 hours since it was not priced correctly).

Hopefully it should all be up by the end of next week. I will start my own thread as it will be a sort of review. So far i am looking at about 20 benchmark and games tests which is why it will take so long. It will give people thinking about changing a half decent guide as to what to get.

Just managed to score a E5200 for 52 delivered, 4ghz or bust :D

Snap. :D:D

hi

just adding my thoughts - in the last week iv bought an e5200 £60; 1gig 4870 £190 freezer 7 pro £18 and a asus p5k £60 = £330

iv overclocked the 5200 to 3.45 ghz - im sure it will go faster but i havent pushed my luck

i installed Crysis warhead last night and am playing silky smooth at enthusiast level graphics at 1920 * 1080 (but no AA) on my samsung 40 inch lcd.

now i dont know how much better the E7200 or any of the 8000 series would be, but for £330 i cant believe how good this system runs, and thats using vista 64 bit with 4 gig of geil 6400 ram

best and cheapest big upgrade iv ever made

and warhead is great fun

hope this helps

best regards

ian

Thanks for all the input people, so it looks like the e5200 is the 1 to go for! Coupled with a decent mobo and 6400 ram, it seems decent performance doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg these days, will also be really interested to see the difference in benches! :)

Looking forward to seeing this-got an E4500 at the mo and am undecided about an upgrade :D

Come on pastymuncher get cracking :)
Should be an interesting article.

I'm rooting for the E5200.

I always favour the underdog, it is a British character trait afterall.

It should be here today hopefully along with my new speakers. I have started doing the E6600 benchies using the very latest drivers. It's going to take quite a while so i really don't think i will be able to post before the end of next week. Full benchies will be done using the E6600, E5200 and E4300 as i still have all of those and will be benched at stock, 3ghz, 3.6Ghz (the E4300 maxxes out at 3.4 though) and whatever i can get the other two maxxed at. It's 3.8Ghz for the E6600. Hoping to hit 4Ghz with the E5200. The Q6600 benchies are fairly thorough as i benched it a lot when i had it. The E8500 is a bit patchy though due to the problems i had with it but i will post what i have got. You just have to wait now. :D:D:D
