Can't decide between a Clio Sport 182 & Audi TT 225!

Had two rear shocks replaced at last MOT as it failed due to a serious leak on one, they cost around £58 each. Again its another common fault on the 182, they do seem to go through rear shocks quite quickly.

I was surprised at the cost of the shocks, thought they were quite cheap compared to other 'sporty' models. Got a set of 4 for £100 (think the fronts are a bit cheaper).

From the OPs comment about his driving style (i.e. not interested in cornering ability), the choice looks really easy. i.e. the Clio is a backroad God, the TT a girly namby pamby poseur driven by either birds or blokes wearing too much hair gel.
I'd suggest you go with the TT.

used plenty of cruise control i would be looking at maybe 5mpg or so more

Cruise control is ridiculously thirsty... accelerates up hills, and slows down down hills, if i paid for fuel i'd be wary of cruise all the time, but otherwise, love using it on otorways, and in camera zones.

I checked at every garage I could find within 20 miles of me in West Sussex... none were anywhere close to £300!

My local Renault Specilist charged £225 + vat for the belt only change, add on £80 if you wanted the full cam kit :)

The belt changes on the 172 Cup are much cheaper as there is no aircon in the way, not sure about the MK1 172's. I think the front bumper etc has to come off on aircon equiped cars hence adding to the timescale and labour costs. The cam belt kit alone is over £100 which includes belt and pulleys, the aux belt is around £11.

Get a Trophy

This man is correct, driving a normal 182 cup just wasnt the same as driving the trophy and with the prices they sit at the moment they are easily affordable.

Great car, you can get a good one for around £7000 - £7500 :)

I don't use it on windy roads, only following traffic on slower straights to and from town etc.

No thats not true.
The reason its £600 is because its takes a lot of labour hours, much more than standard clios

No, it is true...Im not going to make it up am I? It takes about 3 hours labour IIRC when I had the belt and tensioner changed on my old 172 and it cost me £250 all in from my local renault specialist.

Not calling you a liar at all, but it's generally at least £130 for the kit and 4 hours labour to change a cam belt on a 182... so £250 would be an exceptional price I think and certainly contrary to the norm. As I say, I have checked every garage within some distance and can find nothing cheaper than £550. I'll keep looking though and if I need ot travel further afield then I will do. :)

Like I said, £225+ the dreaded for just the belt change, adding on £80 for the full cam kit is what I paid :)
