Sky HD

I'm looking at sky ATM, seems to be the way to go for HD, virgin only has 2 channels I believe, or was thinking of freesat.

Seriously - the bandwidth requirements for 1080p broadcasts are massive.
It'll be years until we see it.
That's why people are happy to buy plasma screens - these are obviously not 1080p.
However as SD and HD broadcasts for now and the future don't require 1080p all you lose is the 1080p when watching Bluray etc (which although stunning is something people are willing to miss).

Erm I think you'll find there are quite a few 1080p plasmas kicking around now. I have a Panasonic 42PZ81B sat in my front room which is full hd. Looks pretty bloody good using SD, Sky HD looks really good at 1080i and Blu-Ray HD-DVD look incredible and its still running in so isn't configured properly yet either.

BTW there are a whole bunch of new HD Movie channels coming in October + some others as well.

I recently switched from Virgin Media to Sky HD and really haven't looked back. Whilst it doesn't do as good a job as the V+ Box at upscaling, the Sky HD box and the content is worth the extra tenner imo. We get quite a bit from it, so it suits us.

Also as J1nxy said, there are quite a few new HD channels going on air before the end of the year.

Theres currently 19 HD channels, with a further 7 coming next month.

169 - Sky2 HD (from 01/11/08)

207 - Bio. HD (Before end 2008)

334 - Sky Comedy HD (from 15/10/08)

334 - Sky Action HD (from 8/10/08) (EPG#335 from 15/10/08)

335 - Sky MdrnGrtsHD (from 8/10/08) (EPG#339 from 15/10/08)

336 - Sky Family HD (from 15/10/08)

336 - Sky Drama HD (from 8/10/08) (EPG#337 from 15/10/08)

338 - Sky ScFi/HorHD (from 15/10/08)

346 - MTV HD Europe (Before end 2008)

556 - Crime & Investigation HD (Before end 2008)

Looking forward to MTV HD Europe as long as they play some music vids and it's just not full of appalling programmes!

I'm not saying there aren't - what I was saying is that people are happy to buy 720p plasmas even today because all they really lose out on is the 1080p from Bluray.

I stand by what I say with regards 1080p broadcasting - it is not going to happen in the near future.
I work for a company heavily involved with STB's and because of this the industry as a whole.
It really isn't on anyone's radar at the moment.

Forget 1080p unless you're going to be sitting within about 6ft from a 42 inch screen or about 7/8ft from a 50. Your eyes physically don't have the resolution to see the differences.

Persuading the parents to ring up sky and talk about cancelling becauseof the economy etc, then haggling for a cheaper deal and skyHD box. The toshiba LCD looks crap for SD, but pretty good for HD.

I'm quite happy with freeview on my Kuro, looks lovely with a good channel :D

Quick question about SkyHD box. Does it have to be used with HDMI or can you use component?

Depends on the box I believe - more recent ones dont have component? My original box did have, and when it was replaced due to a fault the new one doesn't have component out.
