All PC Gamers are pirates and the PC is hard to program for...

That's not what he meant but I'll comment on it anyway.Regardless of how I got GoW1, I played it for 10 mins, and although I loved what it was trying to do I couldn't overlook the fact that it was pausing every 3 seconds, didn't support surround sound (yet alone stereo sound tbh) properly and crashed intermitantly. It's been removed and banished from my pc. Any one who paid for that game at release should have had steam coming from their ears as in my view it's unacceptable to charge anyone any amount of money to play something that's obviously incomplete.

If they'd released a demo of that buggy POS I doubt they would have sold half as many copies as they did at launch.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Amen to that, i was livid when i got gears, went through the lengthy install process, to find that, while the game was running at 60+ FPS, the stutters completely ruined it. As if that wasnt bad enough, not a single Epic employee commented on it in there forums, and no patch came out trying to rectify it, i angry that i had bought a worthless game, and also angry that loads of other people out there are having the same problem with no help from Epic. Makes you wonder why people turn to consoles to avoid technical crap like this, or pirate games to avoid the feeling of wasting money on a broken game?

Just to continue with what I was saying about it being buggy, in case anyone has any doubts:

The PC release of Gears of War has been plagued by numerous problems including crashes, problems with the Games for Windows Live system, sound, disappearing saved games, and framerate (stuttering) issues.[citation needed] A patch was released on November 28 to fix performance issues and also the Games For Windows - LIVE update issue.[37] The patch was only released for American and Western European versions of the game ; legitimate purchasers of the Eastern European and Russian versions were informed that "the game would continue to function without the patch" and never issued a corresponding version.

I'm just in the middle of pulling back a link from their forums via the way back machine, but to sufice to say at the time of release the epic forums went into a **** storm because of the bugs.

edit: No need for the archive link, it all kicked off around here.

I purchased Unreal 3 coz of the reviews, but got bored very quickly. I ended up giving it away in a bundle deal when I sold my 8800 GTS. I say make good quality game, and people will buy. There will always be some pirates, but a lot of people I think are starting to realise you need to pay for the game (support it) or you wont get a sequel/the developers could go bust and wont make other cool games.

I buy games I think are worth my money. Recently I paid for Crysis Warhead on Steam and I think it was worth every penny. They priced that game correctly I think. People will say, oh the story mode was too short... I think that is silly. First of all, they charged you less money. Secondly, its one of those games you can play over at least 3-4 times before your totally bored of it. I already completed it two times and my cousin like 5 times. lol. Thirdly, it has online multi-player too, which is quite fun I thought, much better then the one that came with Crysis, at least for me.

Anyway, I am rambling on. In a nutshell, make quality games, and people will buy them.

is it even up to him?
epic are only the developers and Microsoft are the publishers and if MS want the game out on the PC maybe as a vista/windows 7 exclusive then it will come out no matter what cliffyb says or wants

My experience with Gears 1 was poor, but I got it working eventually. Once I'd completed the game though I tried to play it again...and I couldn't.

It's a really shallow game after the initial 'wow' factor has worn off.

What really irks me though is the bad press that the PC is receiving these days, more and more often, from people who should know better.

I see plenty of the stuttering & FPS drop on the consoles.

So your saying GOW is the only game at launch that was buggy on the pc.

Not at all. What I'm saying is that the people who ported GoW1 made a shambles of it; it took them 2 months to fix the bugs (don't know if they got all of them or not) and they left every one who didn't have an American or Western European version of the game out in the cold. Based on that why should I even consider buying the sequel on PC (at the very least on release day) when the same people are behind it?

We're talking about stuttering like every 3 seconds on the pc port when it came out.

is it still the case that all consol games are made on a pc system then dumbed down to work on consoles, if so, then why not release it ont he PC, its already working on it, no point leaving it to rot on a shelf when they can make a few bucks off it.

Sounds like hype to me, xbox only, small print = untill 2009.... lol.

It's a game you enjoy more with a controller, 3rd person games are a lot better with a controller where as 1st person is better with K/M.

I would say there are more games released with major bugs than with not so it is to be expected & some of those games are very successful in the long term.
So i would say bugs on release is not a good enough reason to completely ignore a game but major bugs that are fixed over time are.
That don't stop people buying playing the BF series on mass tho ;)

It's a very sad state of affairs when the consumer just roles over and accepts these bugs as the norm. I'm just as guilty of it as anyone though.

but major bugs that are fixed over time are.

Well that takes care of Gears of War then because they were major bugs.

I don't know if you saw but I added more to my post you quoted while you were replying.

We bought the unreal games because we didint have broadband back in the day, now we just pirate them. /sigh Piracy is indeed one of the many problems that pc gaming is facing but you cant blame the companies that want their games to sell more. Console games sell much more than pc games and thats a fact.

I ment to say, that are not fixed over time are a reason not to buy.
So that does not take care of it for most as few have your strict standard at launch.
Even tho we all wish for a bug free game at launch

I don't think it's a strict standard that a game should be playable at launch

Anyway we've rattled on long enough, I think we're both roughly on the same page anyway, just that you're happier to put up with bugs :p

Shame, and there was me looking forward to hours of repeative mind numbing action playing that game. Think I played the first one for around 15 mins before I got bored.

I think Epic went downhill after UT2004. This is coming from someone who purchased the original Unreal, UT: GOTY, UT2003 and 2004. I've supported them by making these purchases, and they turn around calling high end users likely pirates? Nevermind, GOW isn't worth the time to pirate anyway...

I dont pirate any pc games, i buy every one i play.

Me too. I find the statement branding all PC users as Torrent pirates offensive

And like someone mentioned it was the PC users who bought the original Unreal games (myself included) that help make them who they are today
