Just purchased a 4850 from the MM and it arrived yesterday. (thanks to GT Junkie :D)

Anyway I un-installed the Nvidia drivers using driver cleaner pro but before I did this I ran 3d Mark 06 just to give me a reference point for when I put the 4850 in.

Score came in at 11919.

Card card and software then removed and then the 4850 was installed along with ATI drivers.

Ran 3d Mark 06 again and score came in at 10989..WTF...!!!!!

Tried crysis warhead and its noticeably slower and choppier and so is Stalker Clear Sky. Both on exactly the same settings as before. I cant tell the difference on COD4 but the frame rates on that are so high it would be hard to tell anyway. This is on Vista 64 ultimate.

So is there anywhere I should be looking for a settings change. Maybe bios or somewhere else. Additionally I have a HTPC with an OC'd E2200 and an 8800GTS 512 and this scores 12382 rest of it is just cheapy stuff picked up from MM and the bay etc. So could my PSU affect this? I'm using a Jeantech Storm 700w modular PSU (bought from the purple shirts place). It is SLI & Crossfire certified so I thought this would fine but am aware that its not what I'd call a top brand (cost me £70 though)

Main rig spec below:

E6320 @ 3.6gig (akasa revo cooler)
4gb G-Skill PC8500 @ 1057mhz (1:1) 5-5-5-12
HD4850 512mb (stock speeds)
MSI P35 Neo2 FR mobo
4 x Seagate 320gb Sata2 hdd's Raid 0 array
Coolermaster CM90 case with 6 x 120mm fans & 6 channel fan controller

Sorry for short novel above chaps but any help appreciated.

Cheers..!!

Sounds like a driver problem mate it should be scoring more in 3dmark06 with your setup. Have you checked your ccc setting to see if you have maybe got some aa forced in there which would effect both your 06 score and crysis performance. What driver version are you running the 8.9 officials i take it?

Yeah originally I tried the 8.9 officials, then tried the XG Systems 8.9's. Both scored pretty much the same.

XG drivers I got around 20pts more..!!

You could give the new 8.10 betas a go they come with fan control in the ccc which is pretty handy and from reports they seem to be a pretty nice set.

1. Check GPU-z for 16x PCI-e and clocks
2. Check CCC for any forced settings although I believe they default to performance settings
2. Install 8.10betas over the top
3. if you still get poor results, I'd remove all ATI drivers and start again...

Must admit I've not checked GPU-z but will do when I finish work. The rest sounds like sense as well so I will try that later. Thanks..!!

I thought the 4850 was similar to a 8800GT? I wouldnt expect a big jump, even with the 4870.

Thats the point though mate, I've now got less performance.

Also check some reviews bud, 4850 is substantially quicker than an 8800GT.

No the 4850 is much faster than a 8800gt. Check some reviews its faster than all 8 series cards. He has the old g80 gts640 which in turn is slower than the gt anyway so he should be seeing a nice bump in performance. As for not seeing a big jump from a 4870 from a gt have you read any reviews at all the 4870 is way faster.

Everyone blind in here :-

HES RUNNING 3D Mark 06!!! :p

Its no good now, should be running Vantage, my 4850 gets a lower score than my old 8800 GT in that heap.:)

Thats why I stated about Warhead and Clear Sky being noticeable poorer in performance.

But surely even though I'm running 06, its still an indicator of performance, and as I didnt have vantage installed at the time I could'nt really use that as reference point now could I? :D

No you havn't. :)

For everyone who missed it :-

HES RUNNING 3D Mark 06!!! :p

Run Vantage/games, not old 06, even my 4850 gets a lower score in 06 than my old 8800 GT, as 06 is no good now.

He DID run games... STALKER and Warhead... read the OP properly.

OP, ignore 3DMARK, would it be too much of a pain to try a reformat of Vista and start afresh?

As hes not running an older card on an older benchmark, as i said above my 4850 got a lower score than my 8800 GT in 06, yet in games its much faster.

Must be a problem somewhere though if his games are not much better, unless its because Clear Sky and ****head are Nvidia games, or its his overclock, tried it back at stock, tried other games etc...

All benchies were done at stock.

Anyhow now I'm home I tried an overclock, they all passed and made little difference but GPU-z screen may point in the right direction here.

Is that saying my PCI-e slot is only running at 2 speed?

How the hell do I change it? Dont see anything in the bios and how cold that have changed as I'm 100% positive that was'nt the case on my Nvidia card?

Hmm not sure... is nit not saying you have 2x PCI-E slots running at 16x? If not definately go check in the BIOS and see what the lanes are set to.

Drivers wont bloody uninstall now..!! Was going to try the 8.10 betas but Ive just removed them with Driver Cleaner Pro rebooted and hey presto card is still being recognised as installed...FFS..!!
