Watching that programme "long way.." currently on BBC2.

Wow does it bring back some memories. There is nothing like a gap year. Absolutely nothing. The things you see and do in one day, you would not do in a year of normal life.

Also going on a 2 week holiday just doesn't compare. You can't get into the same mindset in two weeks as you can in 3month+ away. When you're away for just a few weeks, yeah you can relax but at the back of your mind is always your return. Whereas when you're away travelling becomes your life - you're only thinking of your next holiday, your next adventure.

My god would i love to do it again. Yes, earning a good wage and doing a good job is satisfying, also one cannot live carefree - and in order to tarvel you need money. But I would love to go again soo much!

If you are starting uni, or have just finished and don't know waht to do...MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A GAP YEAR AT HE END OF UNI...if not before you start...or both!!

I think I must be strange. I don't really like traveling - I'm much happier staying at home. But then I guess I did a lot of traveling as a small child, so maybe that got it out of my system.

For my gap year, I worked to save money for Uni. Still ended up in debt mind you, but only a small student loan which I paid off after a year.

Gap year is the way to go :)

Admittedly I simply worked at home when I took one, but still I did an awful lot building my business so maintain - there's no reason to rush to uni.

I've just started uni at the tender age of 17 - I will be here for 6 years if I'm lucky and after that I will work for like 40 years. Boring.

Should have done a gap year!

Most fun you will ever have if my mates who are on them are to be believed. What a missed opportunity on my part, I feel.

PS guy on my floor has done 5 gap years. He's got his head screwed on.

You can still take one year off after you've done uni. If your plan of finishing uni at 23 works out, that's a pretty good age to go on one.

No one has enough money once they've finished uni. I'm gonna do it after getting my ICAS and CTA certifications and before moving to Oz.

you can take a year off at any time surely even if your not doing uni?. im in a full time job but I want to take some time off to do travelling next year

I like the way you think. :)

I went to New Zealand last year for a month, and now my family and me are heading out there.

I'm going out early though, I finish Uni July 2009 and will then work and save until June/July 2010. I'll then move out to New Zealand and stay for 6 months, working and travelling. Skiing to start with, maybe around Queenstown, then I'll try and get a stable job, otherwise I'll work and travel.

:D Can't wait till the day.

How much did you take with you?

How did you get into uni at 17?

Before settling down to work (No uni) I spent time travelling Australia and Thailand, I would strongly reccomend anyone to do it if they can, I experienced some things that I'll never forget :)

I'm going travelling in January. Going all round SE Asia then East coast of Oz, Fiji and San Francisco. Anyone have any experience of these places? Would love to hear from people who have done a similar route and what where the highlights/disappointments of these places.

how do you even start organizing something like that? are you going alone?

I took a gap gear and all I did was work in some crappy office job to earn enough to pay for Uni, as well as receiving treatment for clinical depression. An excellent year that was.
