raid card

I thought that i lose half i my storage when using a stripe array and that would explain the title as a one disk quota... (half of two?)...
System has gone crazy with blue screens at the mo so once this is sorted i can test again... Hardware errors may just be the storage controller??

You've set them as RAID 1 haven't you. :)

Explain??? Raid 1 = mirror
Raid 0 = stripe

Im getting the feeling ive ****ed something up here?

If you had 2 300GB drives in RAID 0 (Stripe), windows would show the drive as being almost 600GB, not almost 300GB.

RAID 1 mirrors the drivers, so that each drive has identical data as each other. Meaning that windows would "see" your drives as being almost 300GB.

correct.... And if i had raid selected in bios for these drives then what probs could i expect??? bear in mind ive been pretty stable for the past month??

It would still be raid!!! I think i may have labelled these disks as "stripe" in the raid utility which has further confused me into believing i had configured a stripe... That should be sorted now just as long as the posted results above reflect its actual "mirror" status i can move on... thanks guys !

Yes, the speeds that you have posted are consistent with a single drive or mirror array. You would get far more speed from a stripe array, as I had said, about double the transfer rates that you are currently seeing. I had pretty much ruled out a mirror array, as it was named 'nvidia stripe', which I have seen in single drive arrays before, but naming a mirror array 'stripe' is way funny, kind of thing I would do!

If you want to go for more speed, then you are best to start again and do a new install of your OS, but going back to what we talked about at the beginning of this thread, your rig is way fast already. Have fun with it.

To throw a spanner in the works... ive just realised after opening everything up that i have the 150gb version of the velociraptor so the original array (stripe) was correctly configured!!!!! 150 + 150 = 300gb!!!! cant believe this. so somehow im only getting half the performance..
How do i get to the bottom of all this? the test above is valid so the question is What can significantly affect hard drive performance..
The array is labelled as healthy during post and it passed integrity checks im pretty sure, stripe size was 128, caching and extra performance boost features in vista were all turned on, drive has been regularly defragmented and is about half full.. I cant think of anything else!!
