Piracy- it's killing PC gaming

Who is more valuable to the industry.

Person 1 - Buys all his games, but only buys one to two games a month.

Person 2 - Copies 20 games a month, but buys 5 games a month.

Which person would the industry prefer?

Second one obviously, but a lot of people dont buy any games.

Copying games gives the companies no loss whatsoever, but if you dont buy any games either its no good to them.

A story.. or a memory? :p

Drat busted *grabs cape runs for the door*

Ah, glad to see the ol' entertainment threads are still popping up.

*gets a beer and watches the fun*

You have beer  at this time of the day !! can i have some ? :D

also - adsta - your stories do make me laugh

you forgot to add that once in jail the perp would get penetrated in a violent manner - hard and deep - by a big burly bloke

people who dont pirate games get to go to bed at night with a clear concience
next to beautiful women [and a good sausaging ensues]

i hope people who pirate games - or people like snowdog who pirate games/think it is acceptable practice to pirate games get the first option thrust on them like a tonne of bricks

and yes snowdog
you will look like the DUMB IDIOT when you are being gang raped in jail

I do what i can :D I knew i forgot something in my story cheers for picking it up :D

:p

One think I think people have overlooked concerning the sales of PC games are the MMO's. I've been playing/buying Games for over 20 years and it wasn't untill I started playing City of Heroes that my buying of PC Games droped to the point of only buying 1 or 2 new games a year. Even now after wow and currently with WAR I wont be buying many PC games for quite a while.

I wonder if MMO's were to make it onto consoles they'd suffer the same problem. Console games are designed to be played for a few weeks/months max and then onto the next, most PC only games have more longevity.

i sold my 360 in the mindset that any game coming out on that which i might play will hit pc eventually

then of course gears 2 for pc gets canned by epic

why

these crazy tech savvy[lol] pirates

i know epics reasoning behind it was unjust - and that gearsPC and unreal t 3 were both mammoth abortions - but still - i would have liked gears 2 a bit - even enough to bother with the campain a bit

not only a lost sale but a lost game entirely

and the fact that piracy exists gives devs the excuse in the first place

You agree with him? I thought you'd hate person 2?

How often does this have to be repeated in this thread?
People take free stuff, but don't even bother when it is payed for...

you kind of missed the point

its fairly obvious what mark means and also why i agree with him

and to your second quote...
[you do love to quote me dont you]
i was asking him to elaborate on his personal point of view point as it intreagued me

im sure if we woke up tomorrow and the games industry announced it was ceasing to function due to losses/credcrunch etc
you would be the first to complain

Just because someone downloads a game doesn't mean they were going to ever buy it. Hence why it isn't necessarily a lost sale.

[EDIT] oh and Gears 2 on the PC was canned due to crappy sales, the first wasn't pirated any more than any other game, in fact Spore was downloaded far more times than Gears yet that had huge sales. The reason why Gears 1 sold badly because it was a slightly above average shooter that was badly ported. Epic just love to throw their toys out of the pram when sales fall.

Well, strictly speaking I don't have one yet...But with flexi time I'll have one in just over 30 mins I think ;)

lucky bugger !

silly question but what does savvy actually mean ?

I still dont get the crazy tech savvy comment tbh, i assume its some insult i dunno :p

Its obvious that PC gaming is reaching the end now. Piracy is getting out of control. The majority of PC gamers are obviously pirates so why bother fighting it anymore. Publishers will stop releasing PC games altogether so save your money for 360/PS3 instead. I have all 3 systems so will not lose out at all but people with high end gaming machines will become bored very quickly and their hardware will be worthless. Who wants a £2-3K white elephant.

If it ever comes to that AMD and nVidia will start funding games to make use of their hardware.

When I stopped downloading games, I purchased every game I'd played and enjoyed. So yeah, If I never started buying my games, you could count them as lost sales.

I think most people here know i'm not a fan of the current state of the PC gaming market, however even i think that is a bit of an overstatement. Things like Steam will pick up and then smaller developers will jump back into developing for the PC, it's just in a rut at the moment.

We were saying not ALL downloads are counted as a lost sale. You've just proven that point by saying you only bought the ones you enjoyed, loads of games are downloaded only to be deleted shortly after as they're rubbish yet the developers for these titles count every download as a lost sale which clearly isn't the case. Estimates made by Crytek using the amount of times their patch was downloaded (flawed theory in itself) led them to claiming Crysis would have been the best selling game ever, ever, ever (exaggerating for effect :p) but people pirated it, clearly a flawed argument.

Since when do good games not sell ?

Orange box & steam games keep selling.
There are over 10k servers for cod4...
You can't play on any legal servers ( so the 10 k on the list) without a legit cd key & copy.

It's just the rubbish games that don't sell...
