Piracy- it's killing PC gaming

Don't you think the good games deserve the creators getting some money though?

that is the fairest point made so fare imo

my opinion is that no matter how crap a game is - a team of people have worked as hard as possible with what resources they have available to make a game

they deserve to get paid just as much as a policeman/office worker/burger flipper

if they are not gaining revenue because people 'copy' then they will be out of the job

im not surprised a lot of devs are saying - sod it and moving onto something else

(This was in reply to snowdogs post, this topic moves so fast o.O)

I never said I don't buy games, I just don't buy rubbish.
I have legit keys/copy's of good games like cod4, tf2 etcetc...

rjk, there's no point arguing that point, before Ulf or fini start the whole semantics argument between piracy and theft. We'll just end up with 12 pages of name calling, as all the previous piracy threads have descended. :/

Why did you mention me? I hadn't said anything, and I wasn't planning to.

aye id like to know this too how can it get "leaked" unless its from someone in the company.
Or maybe a reseller ie employee from purple shop guys just decides oo these are not due out for another 2weeks il leek it on the net then that will show them MWAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!

:D
It can be from various places.. I believe most of the time it happens at the warehouses where the disks are printed and packaged before being shipped to retailers. All it takes is one guy on the production line to swipe a copy. It is also likely it happens at game stores when they get the copies in stock before release date, again, all it takes is one employee to swipe one copy and it'll spread on the Internet once released.

This is the point tbh. I've got a shed load of bought games yet when i mention the fact i occasionally download a pirate game people jump to the conclusion that i never ever buy anything which clearly isn't the case.

then the employee of said shop who leaks the new game is in the situation of thinking this... "if i leak this game then they wont make games for my shop to sell and i will be made redundant - my girlfriend will dump me as i will have no money to buy deoderant with and i will lose my home - end up on the streets playing bob marley covers on a toy guitar and sitting on a piece of cardboard"

no offence ulf, just yourself and fini seem to be usually rather prominent in these piracy threads :)

Aye I usually am, and I will continue to discuss piracy, I've just given up on talking about reasons for it and the "theft vs. infringement" topics for the reasons you stated. It's just the same every time. :p

he wasnt getting at you dude
he was trying to avoid the discussion going down the pan

Aye it was nothing personal, just wanted to ask him why he mentioned me.

I can see his reasoning now and it's fine by me as what he said is true. :)

Downloading falls under making a home copy.

In fairness snowdog the passage you just quoted seems to be talking about making a copy of a physical disc you own and have in your home, not a download. I don't know if you're quoting Dutch law, but I used to think British law was pretty ambiguous when it comes to downloading until someone corrected me by showing me this: -

Copyright said:
17 Infringement of copyright by copying

(1) The copying of the work is an act restricted by the copyright in every description of copyright work; and references in this Part to copying and copies shall be construed as follows.

(2) Copying in relation to a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work means reproducing the work in any material form.

This includes storing the work in any medium by electronic means.

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/ukpga_19880048_en_2#pt1-ch2-pb1-l1g17

It's pretty clear here that if you download a game on to your computer without owning a physical copy then you're infringing on the rights of the copyright owner.

And no demo's don't make a good impression usually, nor do reviews.

Use MetaCritic?

The amalgamation of 30+ reviews can't be wrong..

I haven't found a single game where I disagree with both the demo and all the reviews available.

*edit*

If I did disagree with the demo and reviews, then I'll have spent £20 on a carp game. It's not exactly re-mortgage stuff ;)

Drama queen much?

Seriously, what is going through your mind when you come up with this stuff? From your previous posts and this one, it doesn't seem like you have any desire to discuss this topic in a realistic or factual manner, all you seem to be doing is attempting to stir things up.

Nobody has ever ended up on a street corner playing Bob Marley as a result of piracy, and no one ever will.

They can, I just don't like crysis for example or warhead, yes it seems to have good reviews...
There are many many many more examples...

Reviews really aren't reliable tbh, GTAIV is the perfect example, perfect 10s from everyone yet a couple of months down the line i would be willing to bet the majority don't agree with the high scores it got, i know i didn't. Wish i had never bought the sodding thing, just gathers dust now.

I don't know it's rubbish, I have to try it first for an hour or 2.

so because demos or reviews arent good enough - you must copy a game?

Second one obviously, but a lot of people dont buy any games.

Copying games gives the companies no loss whatsoever, but if you dont buy any games either its no good to them.

I know a lot of people dont buy games. If you look at the industry as a whole, someone like Margaret we knows spends at least £100 a year with his Wow subscription, as well as other multi player games he buys on Steam. He may spend about £300 a year on games in total, while a casual gamer, might buy a couple of games a year, in addition there might be another £80-100 on xbox live games that he buys, altogether, a far more valuable customer than Jim Blogs with his wii sports pack that he bought 2 years ago and has kept him happy since.

I buy all my pc games now, its not a moral stance, i know the PC industry needs support, and so i choose to support it. I buy the odd console game, but download most of them, i generally dont play the ones i dont buy very often, i expect its because i have not invested in the game, that it owes me nothing.

I'm beginning to come around to this way of thinking, I don't even read reviews that much anymore.

I tend to try a beta/demo (I pay for a Fileplanet sub) to see if I like it or, in the case of those options not existing, which is becoming too common IMHO, I just download it. If I like it then I'll buy it and, logically, if I don't like it I won't keep playing it. I'd love it if every game had a demo or (as a bonus) a beta.

In the end it comes down to my opinion, I can't disagree more with some reviews these days.

you must have ducked when i fired the sarcasm cannon
as it seems to have sailed well over your head

all my points are valid an hold truth

my post suggested that if a game shop employee leaks a game early then the loss of sales will cause the shop to close and him lose his job
SORRY FOR MAKING IT A BIT MORE COLOURFUL THAN THAT

things can be relavent and funny
and you arent going to think its funny if you dont agree in the first place
