£150 to remove this rust, good price?

You wont get anything out of Ford - I had rust coming through from the inside on my Mondeo and they wouldnt cover it under warranty becuase it hadn't yet made a hole in the paintwork. I said well the handbook says if you dont notify Ford immediatly the claim is invalid, so it would be rejected if I turned up with a hole!

They were not interested, car was only 5 years old as well. I say only, obviously in woohoo's land of company cars thats a banger fit only for the scrap yard and it wasnt even worth the petrol in driving to Ford. I'm amazed I even washed it...

The biggest problem with modern cars is the birk that sold you it. No manafacturer in this country has a good dealer network.

And Alfa have about the worst. Alfa's new regulations need to start having an impact. That said they did show every dealer inside the M25 the door for refusing to comply.

Excuse me, your talking to a bloke who is used to driving bangers (did you ever see my Mondy ST:eek:), my focus has worse bits than Toms BM:p

My point simply is that, you pick up all sorts of stuff when driving cars, if all you ever do is fuss and worry about keeping the car pristine, you will turn into one of the DW wierdo's, fair enough if its a cheap repair, but £150 on something so insignificant (from the pic anyway), surely thats not a good way to spend your money.

Depends what your priorities are. I wouldnt spend £150 fixing that rust but I would get it fixed - for less, elsewhere. If the rest of the car is mint it doesnt really matter if its 1 day old or 100 years old, it's unsightly.

How much less though?

They need to take the bumper off and then sand out and then respray the whole back lip. Can I really get it done elsewhere for THAT much cheaper with the same guarantee as BMW?

Not had time yet to ring about.

If you come to Gosport then my local guy can do such a small job cheaper I'm sure and he said if you're not happy you don't pay anything when I had my saloon there last time :)

Its an old car at the end of the day, your likely to get odds and sods of imperfections, its probabaly somewhere where its been chipped and hence you have rust now.

The more you strive for perfection with old cars the more you will notice things, you end up worrying about the car more than driving it! I certainly wouldnt spend £150 on something like that.

I hate people that say this.
Should we all just drive bangers? Some people like keeping a car nice and perfect as it should be

Yes fixing that rust really is an easy job, but £150 is nothing for a good fix tbh. Fair enough yea you could get it done £100 elsewhere or £50 if you shopped around but i wouldn't. Theres a lot of dodgy bodyshops out there and i can tell you first hand that if you try get a good price on something then your car will come with plenty more problems on the way back. Best thing to do in situations like this is remove the panel that needs to be painted and give them it so they can't mess up the rest of the car. I guess with your problem however you can't do this which is why i'd definitely take it to bmw. At least if it doesn't come back right you can ensure they can't do a runner on you; it's bmw afterall

For the love of God, where did I say everyone should drive ****ing bangers?

Its a never ending circle with cars, its impossible, to quote yourself, to keep a car 'perfect', you drive cars they pick up imperfections along the way, if you spend all your hard earned constantly fixing every last damn nick you'll never have any money to drive it.

Ive had new cars, old cars, and admittedly ive spent many a hour and cash trying to keep em spangly aswell, but in the last few years ive realised that you just cant avoid picking up dings, dents, scrapes, stone chips, dents in leather, it just happens when you drive cars. Yeah, fix the big stuff, and keep the car nice and shiney, but worry about a rust patch the size of a finger nail, nah.

As i said before £150 is a lot of money to fix something as insignificant as that, id rather put that money towards fixing your oil issue tbh Tom.

It's hardly insignificant though is it. Not only is it unsightly and makes the car look like an unloved old banger, but left untreated it will only spread and become worse until the whole panel is rotten and falling apart. Suggesting to leave a rust patch untreated is quite frankly stupid, especially when taking into account that this is a reasonably new 'prestige' car.

I guess we all have differing opinions, if i see a tiny patch on a car, I dont see the car as a banger or unsightly, I guess if he's noticed it now, its gonna bug him until its fixed.

Oh Clarkey, I dont care much for your petty insult either, his rear end isnt gonna fall to bits now that he has a small patch of rust.

No its not. I think I've done a pretty good job with my car over the last 2 years and the previous owner managed it for the entire time he had it.

Just because you are incapable of keeping cars nice don't assume that doing so is a waste of time for everyone else :)

So your car has absolutely no stonechips, no imperfections whatsoever? Im inclined not to believe that.

This thread is rusting at the edges!

*sprays WD40 on the thread*

Lol, you're all lubed up :p

It has a small amount of stonechips on the front bumper and the bonnet. It has one small chip under the passenger side wing mirror and a small mark on the rear bumper.

Thats it at the moment :) All other panels are perfect.

It did have a trolley dink in the rear passenger door and some rust coming through on the drivers side sideskirt but both of these have been attended to :)

The alloys dont count btw :p
