I've waited a while for the new graphics etc to come out, so now I know nothing about the new generation of cards, processors, mobo etc..! :p

Could some kind soul please spec something that will be an upgrade from:

DELL XPS system

Intel C2D 6700
2GB Mem
2 x 7900GS in SLI

He's wanting to be able to play Left for Dead and Farcry 2 easily on the new system.

Will be needing a complete base unit, no TFT,speakers etc..

But will need a case,PSU,OS etc..

Many thanks,
Mark

The 320GB HDD can be used as the boot drive.

This build seems perfect for your needs. The one below is just a waste of money. Specced it for the sake of it.

Specced a 280GTX and 8GB of v. expensive RAM in this build but both are totally unnecessary unless really needed.

What screen does your mate have?

Um, its one that came with the system.

Thanks very much for speccing something up, much appreciated :)

I take it having 2 x graphics cards is not needed with the new generation of cards?

I can find out size of screen and if he wishes to upgrade.

Yeah, two graphics cards is a waste of time (for the absolute majority of users). Costs a load of money, microstutter and no matter what anyone says, will involve a degree of hassle. One 4870 will rape those two 7900's into oblivion.

If you went for a 24" upgrade for the screen, a GTX280 is a good partner (thinking of Crysis) but the 4870 will be absolutely fine with a 24" screen in all current games (I think Crysis Warhead runs better than Crysis 1 irl, but don't know if this is truely confirmed).

So maybe swap to the GTX280 and keep the first spec, would that work ok?

Yeah that'd be fine.

But the GTX280 gives about 10% (its probably more, guesswork) more power over the 4870 yet costs about 60% more.

So its up to your mate whether he wants to spend that kind of money on a GPU. Personally, I wouldn't.

Hiya MarkLP, what size screen does your friend have? If it is a fairly small screen, would he or she be interested in purchasing a new one as long as it is within the budget? :)

I think its a 19" or 20" So not even sure he wants to change. I don't think he does, but am going to check.

Any reason for changing the RAM? Is it a higher clock or something?

He seems more then happy with Chimerical's Spec.

Only thing he has requested is 'It must be quiet'

So even if its abit more what should I add or change to have a quieter PC?

Thanks!

Swap the case for an Antec P182, buy four Sharkoon Eagle fans:

Maybe swap the cooler on the GPU (whichever one he chooses) for a third party one.

And buy this CPU cooler:

And these rubber fan mounts:

Expensive, I know :(
