running 18w of lighting and 100w (ish) of fan won't be a problem for 1.5mm cable.

Why? There's no law that says you can't do it yourself ;)

What the OP is proposing is allowable under current building regs., but anything much more involved must be done by a certified electrician. My understanding is that a spur off an existing circuit is allowable.

But see below:

Article: Electrical Regulation Changes Hurts the DIY Enthusiast

From 1 January 2005 all electrical work in dwellings will need to comply with Part P requirements and be carried out by persons who are competent to do the work.

Small jobs such as replacing a socket-outlet or a light switch on an existing circuit will not need to be notified to a building control body (although there are some exceptions for high risk areas such as kitchens and bathrooms).

All work that involves adding a new circuit to a dwelling will need to be either notified to building control, who will then inspect the work, or carried out, by a competent person who is registered with a Part P Self-Certification Scheme.

From http://www.buildingservicesguide.com/Articles/Article_4_15.asp

Spurring off an existing circuit is allowed.

New builds (including extensions, conversions etc) must have a "Part P" and Electrical Safety documentation.

Simply changing a light fitting, or spurring off to add a secondary light fitting in an existing building is fine.

There seems to be some wrong information in this thread... Adding extra points in a bathroom is *not* exempt from notificaton as it is in other rooms, therefore the work the OP plans to carry out is a notifiable service under part P of the Building regs

....sorry! :(

errrr, verbal's bro/flatmate just posted as him by mistake

nothing to see here
