A fey days ago I bought a icybok External Enclosure IB-390StUSD-B 3.5" eSATA + USB 2.0 Combo & Docking Station, and mounted the docking station in my pc. I have a old usb icy box with a 320gb ide drive atm and hardly ever use it with other comps then my main system. So I thought Id have the best of both worlds with my new backup system, it will be mainly in my pc but it will be handy if I want to use if on other comps too.

So what 1tb drive do you recommend cos my main concern is that temps might be hiigher with the drive in my antec 900?? People say that the "Western Digital Green Power" drives are cooler then ther other drives but there quite slow. What do you recommend for my situation? I will be ordering in a few hours time.

Go for a 1TB WD Greenpower drive. They run cool and are very quiet as well. Even if they only have an average read of 65Mb/s or so, its good enough for a NAS box

for a backup drive your concern should be safety and not flat out speed so the GP drives should be top of the list and they're really not that slow anyway.

I bought that Icybox + docking station last week as the normal one was out of stock. I quite like it, I put it in my old PC as I dont have any room on my PC but it means I can leave it as an internal drive if I want, or use it as an external drive too.

Does it spin down the drive when its idle if its setup in windows todo??

I'd just go with the cheapest per gig I could get as long as it's not maxtor it should be fine.

Thanks for replying guys,, I think Im going to go for the "Western Digital Green Power" just cos of the heat issues that I might have with other drives. Whatever drive I get will be loads faster then what Im using atm. My transfer speed atm on my usb 320gb backup drive is between 12- 19mb/sec and thats pretty poor.

Plus I dont really trust drives 100% connected by usb cos sometimes if you unplug or switch them too fast after transferring the data, the data will get corrupted, thats why I will be quite annoyed if the icybox doesnt let the drive spin down when idel, cos I will be leaving the icybox in the docking station all the time.

Ok Ive ordered the 1tb WD Greenpower drive, now I just hope my icybox dont let me down by not spinning down the hdd and I hope it stays nice and cool in the docking station?

Well I decided to try my old 200gb from out of my 2nd pc in the icybox, and the first thing i noticed the hdd led dont work:mad: but the hdd does spindown and temps are 37c atm

Are you sure it doesn't work? The LED is very very very very very faint. If you remember from when you opened it up, the LED's are at the back of the casing and have to try and shine through the front panel bit, which is mirrored making it very hard to see.

Im not sure, like it could have been working but was not bright enough to shine through to the front of the case. You can see the power led very clearly tho.

yup

but the multi-user benchmarks can be ignored mostly, as they don't really apply to us.. upon ignoring them, the F1 keeps up pretty well

the black is a better drive though

Just got my drive, and no probs at all,, picked it up, i did a quick format, and it says 931gb so thats good, but why after youve formatted the drive never reports that its empty, I think there was about 20gb used up,, why is this?? Been copying for about 10 mins now and temps are 27c atm, but the drive isnt going at full speed, ony at 18mb/sec cos Im copying off my usb 320gb hdd. I will report back after a few hrs and let you know how the temps are.

Oh yeh the hdd led works with this drive

if you know the files are virus free on the 320, disable av

should get around 30mb/s read speed from a decent usb2 enclosure

Disabled it and still no faster.. actually since been copying the speed has dropped from 18mb to 16mb

Been copying for over 30mins now and temps are 34c now, room temp 21c.
