What do/did your parents do?

My Mum died during childbirth and (strangely) the two guys who were competing for her affections at the time got custody of me. One was an artist and kinda wild and spontaneous and the other worked in an office and was more sensible and dull, they were the opposite of each other! It sure made for some great lols :)

Isn't that "my two dads"?

Mum owns and rents property
Step dad is an electircian

Father was a prison officer before he died.

I've no idea what I'm doing. Something Maths/Physics based.

Mum is a teacher - pretty much my idea of a nightmare
Dad is a civil engineer.

I'm studying to be an electrical engineer, so I guess there was some influence there.

own a cafe together in Rothbury.

i dont yet have a job, sticking with education for a good few years yet.

mabye retail when i go to uni

It's interesting to note everyones dads do decent jobs but everyones mom's seem to do unskilled work :p
Disagree. Mum's a pharmacist & works with one of the big humanitarian institutions.

Dad is a Chartered Engineer.

Great influences but ended up in IT which to these day, I don't think Mum's happy about. She wanted me to go into medicine :(

My father was a lab technician. He died when I was 16 years old (suicide) and my mother remarried some years later.

My mother used to be a real estate agent, but stopped working years ago and began investing in property. Her husband is a maths/science teacher and head of his department.

I think they have about half a dozen properties at the moment, including their residential home.

Neither of my parents had any effect on my career choice.

Dad - secondary school teacher
Mum - stock controller

Mum hasn't affected me to much, but my dad has. He always brought work home with him, worked a stupid number of hours, always unbelievably stressed and really not that well paid.
I have a job where I can not bring work home, little to no stress and is relatively well paid for my career level. Also only 35 hours a week but with loads of optional overtime. Which is a great way to have it.

Dad - Financial Director for Mathesons Cakes :D

Mum - Living the dream of the domestic Houswive

Me - In my Post Grad doing Architecture.....

The Influence? Go Figure

Mum is a staff nurse. Her work is rewarding and fulfilling but the pay is terrible.

Dad (deceased) was a minicab driver, a job he was forced into by his father when he was sacked from Royal Mail.

I'm a techy/developer/company director (usually in that order!) so my parents haven't had much influence on my career choice except perhaps giving me the drive and ambition to create a better standard of living for myself than they enjoyed.

I wonder what this thread would have looked like if you asked the question 50 years ago...

Was thinking last night about how people are influenced by their parents, so my question is a simple one.

What do/did your parent do and what do you do?
Have they effected you in anyway with career choice?

My Dad is (or rather was) a programmer, although I dislike programming he did introduce me to computers at a young age which has deffinately shaped who I am and what I want to do.

My Mum was a receptionist at a doctors surgery and now a medical secretary. Shes taught me that doing the same job for many years is neither fun nor rewarding and I guess has shown me not what I want to do and given me a sence of ambition.

Shame neither of them weren't english teachers. ;)

Dad - teacher, retired on ill health a few years ago
Mum - Headteacher at a middle school :)

I'm kinda thinking of going along the same route but the state of public schools at the moment puts me off

Mum
Currently a Head Teacher
Used to work in science as a lab technician.

Dad
Works in curtain walling (that's big glass buildings to people who don't know what I'm talking about)
Has had lots of jobs in engineering and machine design for a lot of pharmaceutical companies.

Sister
Took after my Mum and is a Teacher.

Me
I'm going into science, with a plan to do a doctorate fairly soon, so I'm following her too. God forbid I ever go anywhere near teaching, though. Teachers do far more work than they are ever credited for.

Dad

Was a builder running his own company
Then worked for Apple
Then started his own software development company
Then sold it and retired

Mum
Don't know
Then started her own cleaning company
Then I don't know
Now works for a global support company doing membership management or something
