any car salesmen here?

well if its any consolation I wouldnt :), surely they hold their value not bad so overpriced not so bad IF true?, anyways no opinions/info on my original query?

Admittedly they are overpriced when compared to similar sized cars like a Focus but then again they hold their value better too so when you come to sell you've probably lost less than if you'd bought the Focus and you've had the pleasure of driving a better car in the meantime.

The only downside is that you've maybe tied up a couple of grand in the meantime but it's hardly the end of the world.

:):) , true.............. why the low opinion of the Golf btw?

Cos Fox is Mr. Valueformoney and doesn't seem to appreciate that not everyone has the same criteria when it comes to buying cars (ie. getting absolutely the best value for money possible at that price range). Some people are quite happy to spend a few grand more for a Golf simply cos they prefer them to the competition - a concept which Fox fails to understand.

You couldn't be any more wrong if you tried. BMW hardly offer 'value for money' cars, do they.

A 150k 530i gives a lot of goodies for the money does it not?

When it was new it certainly wasn't value for money, but drive it to the moon and back and suddenly it's good value for money

It was appalling value for money, it cost more than a considerably newer Mondeo, it costs more to run, it lacks basic things a Mondeo has as standard like electric and heated seats - whichever way you look at it, it's not a value for money purchase.

Your appraisal is wrong.

Where the Golf will live on forever for it's errr

How many miles a year do you do anyway?

agreed its not stunningly beautiful BUT its understated, certainly not bling, def is quality AND isnt a slouch.

As for miles, I`d say 15-20k so not huge mileage, I like the driveability of the torque that these diesels offer.

It's well speced, it's just not value for money; you can get all the same things, albeit not quite as high quality, in a cheaper, newer Mondeo.

but a Mondeo is the most banal looking rep-mobile :)

You could always ask if the dealer will take a trade bid?

its a thought, not sure if they readily do this, my usual 'MO' is sell and buy privately, IMHO u save upwards of 1.5k in this way

Had one of these for a curtousey car once, why anyone would choose one is beyond me.

any particular reasons for your appraisal?

Now, unlike everyone else I am not going to recommend you a Mondeo. You want a small hatch, so a Mondeo isn't suitable. Dont buy one because it's not the car you want.

HOWEVER..

You are demonstrating what is wrong with the Golf owner. You consider the Mondeo to be a banal looking rep-mobile. This is fine - it's an opinion you are entitled to and, frankly, it holds a certain amount of truth. But what on earth do you think the Golf is? It's hardly an exciting car to look at, is it it? It's just... some hatchback. Totally generic. This isnt an issue - some people like that - but you can hardly criticise the styling of the Mondeo.

Furthermore, have you ANY idea how popular the Golf diesel is as a company car? I'd wager there are more reps in Golf TDI's right now than Mondeo TDCI's. Everything you've said about the Mondeo applies equally to the Golf - the Golf *is* the reps hatchback. Infact, it's worse, it's the junior salesreps hatchback. At least you need to flog the most amount of carpets in your region every month for a year to get a good spec Mondeo, whereas the new grads can have a Golf diesel.

Golf owners seem to think the Golf is above all this and I cannot for the life of me understand why. They think its some sort of flash, prestige car, a cut above a 'rep mobile' when in reality it is EXACTLY that - a normal, diesel, repmobile hatchback. If you want a posh diesel, buy an Audi A3. If you just want a decent diesel, buy a Golf, but dont kid yourself it's anything special because it just isn't.

You make some valid points

HOWEVER :) , IMHO Golfs are significantly better looking than Mondeos, typically IMHO because the quality is apparent, my daily commute is 16 miles on a busy A road which is suited to the driveability that the Golf offers, agreed that Audi A3 does look better BUT does it come in the 170 variant?, AND Audis surely are poorer value than Golfs?, I`m open to suggestions btw :), btw I`d say that Mondeos would vastly outnumber 170 golfs as rep-mobiles surely

Actually yes they can in second hand form, as you have mentioned many times before. Are you saying you didn't get good VFM for your 530?

In the context of this thread, no, it's not good VFM. My alternative choice was a Mondeo ST220. The Mondeo ST220 was:

a) Newer - 2003/2004 instead of 2001/2002
b) Better specified
c) Almost as quick despite being cheaper year for year
d) Lower ownership costs on the basis of better projected reliability

The ST220 was the VFM purchase. I decided against it for entirely irrational reasons not at all related to value, which blows eidolons out of date character appraisal out of the water.

My previous car, the Mondeo Ghia X, was without a doubt a maximum VFM purchase. eidolon thinks people never change.

HOWEVER :) , IMHO Golfs are significantly better looking than Mondeos,

I'm not going to disagree because looks are subjective - if you think it looks better then clearly it does, because other peoples opinions of looks are irrelevent to your purchase :)

typically IMHO because the quality is apparent,

Except its not, really, is it? It's not a poorly built car by any stretch of the imagination but neither is it anything special. As always VW are trading on past reputation. They used to build cars with high levels of perceived quality, the Mk4 Golf especially had this as its party trick but these days its not the case.

my daily commute is 16 miles on a busy A road which is suited to the driveability that the Golf offers, agreed that Audi A3 does look better BUT does it come in the 170 variant?

Yes, it does.

AND Audis surely are poorer value than Golfs?,

They are not really that much more expensive than the Golf and for the premium over a used Focus you actually DO get a better quality interior, bigger choice of engines and, if it matters to you, a 'better badge'. Audi *is* a prestige badge, VW is not, irrespective of the shared ownership.

I`m open to suggestions btw :), btw I`d say that Mondeos would vastly outnumber 170 golfs as rep-mobiles surely

Mondeos as a whole, sure. But then Golfs as a whole vastly outnumber Mondeo ST TDCi 155's as rep-mobiles so I'm not entirely sure what your point is.
