Thanx for the intelligent feedback.
I am returning the card today.

As I said before it's not a dud card, these are known issues with the x2!
Yes it is/was. All the issues you raise point directly to a broken card. Just get your refund and buy another card to save us from your whining.

Really now?
So why do I not need to run my fan at 85% to keep it cool? Why do I not get strange shadow effects and weird colours? How come my card runs happily at 800/1000? The only thing you might have a point with is the so called 'micro-stutter', but as I run everything with vsync on I have yet to encounter the problem.
As you say you have a 280 which works for you, that's cool. But please do not try and pass off your own dealings with the x2 as fact, all that does is make you look foolish.
If you own a 4870x2 and you run games with V-sync on then you have absolutley no right to post. You do realise you are limiting the frames to the refresh rate of your monitor? Why the HELL would you do that with an x2? Also the input lag with v-sync on is unbareable. As I said, i bought this card with the purpose being an UPgrade - not a card that I have to run at 60fps max with ridiculous input lag.
I gather you have gained your computer knowledge from a few hours of browsing internet forums?

lol
What is the refresh rate of your display? My 30" 3008wfp is limited to 60Hz, so any framerate above that for me would be meaningless and the x2 is the only card on the market that has a chance of running a vsynced 2560x1600. As such I prefer the silky smoothness of a true locked 60fps display with zero tearing, and tearing annoys me far more than a bit of stutter here and there does. I am sure the Q3 heads or similar who think they need 200fps to be accurate with a railgun will take exception, but what floats your boat might not do it for anyone else.
If anything the person who cannot even realise they have a broken gfx card with massive heat issues is the one who should not be posting.
Nice dig with the computer knowledge bit. I could give you a rambling story about the first PC I used back in 1987 (An Apricot Xeni/386 fact fans), the exciting adventures I had for a major player in the CPU industry at the turn of the millennium putting together machines for computer shows or even my current position as a system administrator for a large IT outsourcing company. But judging by your replies and obvious lack of simple problem solving skills most of it would go whooshing over your head.
Aw bless. Just you go and enjoy your lovely v-sync and I'l enjoy proper gaming with my 280 thanx.
It's obvious that if you have a 4870x2 card you will praise it even if its working or not. I had both cards sitting infront of me so completely non-bias opinion on both and i chose the 280. Simple, nothing to go forum trolling mad over.

You have seen through my façade. My x2 is actually causing me all sorts of problems, and I am covering it up after spending £400 notes on it instead of sending it back for a refund.
As for trolling? Who is the person stating every x2 is broken? Who is the person throwing around nonsense about others knowledge being based around a few hours forum reading?
People came up with more than likely the reasons for a lot of your issues (helloooo you obviously have a broken card, **** happens), but you ignored them and continued with your spiel about how the x2 is totally broken and rubbish. *yawn*
Like I said, I could not care less which card you choose, I was just putting straight some of your FUD.
I gather you have gained your computer knowledge from a few hours of browsing internet forums?
The point is no-one cares. You dont liek the x2. You dont have too. You like the 280. Thats fine.
We can read forums too. You started trolling by goin ATI are **** never buying one again and all that ****. We really aint that bothered.
You have fun on 280 and these ppl will have fun on thier hassle free x2.
From your link:
"But not everyone notices the problem. A lot of people don't even recognize the micro stuttering and therefore don't see any differences to normal situations. The trick is not to see that the game stutters but how it does."
If your one of those special ppl then dont use one. that links mentions nothing about sideports either. its also worth noting that in that article they stress the cr** out of the system to make it suffer from low frame rates and produce the stutter. Later on they say:
"To be fair, we have to admit, it takes such demanding settings to bring the HD 4870 X2 to her knees."
and that later games will be more demanding, but we all know that technology and sofware improves over time.
Im going for a Xfire setting, Knowing that this may be an issue. If it happens im not going to cry and whine about buying ATI ever again becuase i know its a technology limitation, probably will be fixed with drivers at some point, and could happen on SLI too.
The other point is IF you read all these forums threads and were not happy about microstuttering, why did you buy one?
Either way its a mute point, use your 280 and be happy.
It could be a dud, your complaining about overheating. You havnt even explored that avenue.
And no i dont care, im just tired of reading all the NV fanboy BS.

You played FarCry 2 yet, that crashes all the time on Nvidia cards, so give it a whirl and start your ******* GTX 280 IS A PILE OF ******, NVIDIA ARE **** thread please, as id like to read it.![]()
