If you smoke stop now

Hope you get better. My mum is quitting smoking due to lung capacity being pretty bad from smoking since she was in her 20s.

She doesn't know I smoke, but I'm quitting due to her. :) Been smoking for 1 about a year and I'm 18, and feel really guilty for doing it since she found out she had a problem.

Also got my gf and best friend to stop at the same time. We're cutting down to 1 a day for a little while then stopping completely.

Once you manage to do just one of those thigns , it will give you confidence in your willpower, what else you can do.

The first week or so are very difficult, but you won't regret it :)

I've started sorting my eating out from this week onwards too , if you can stop smoking you feel you can do most things that require willpower !

I was joking, I'm not some loser who can't stop smoking. (actually I am. Or am I? Sadly I am.)

Get well soon mate.
Driving kills more than smoking and the pedestrians are the victims here. I don't drive, do you? Do i lecture you to stop? Maybe now you can see where Tefals anguish is coming from. (not aimed at anyone in particular)

Ummm not even close....

Most people know that smoking can cause lung cancer, but it can also cause many other cancers and illnesses.

Smoking kills around 114,000 people in the UK each year.

Of these deaths, about 42,800 are from smoking-related cancers, 30,600 from cardiovascular disease and 29,100 die slowly from emphysema and other chronic lung diseases.

Driving? A drop in the smoking ocean. 3000 odd. 35000 odd seriously injured though. Probably distracted while smoking ;)

P.s get well soon McM

Smoking's hidden death toll revealed

Scots scientists have identified one million more cancer fatalities caused by cigarettes

SMOKING causes hundreds of thousands more deaths each year than previously thought, dramatic scientific research has revealed.
A study, led by experts in Glasgow, showed heightened chances of dying from cancers of the colon, rectum and prostate, as well as from lymphatic leukaemia.

These illnesses cause 930,000 deaths worldwide each year, in addition to more than five million smoking-related deaths estimated by the World Health Organisation as being caused by diseases such as lung cancer, which have long been linked to smoking.

Scotland's health minister and anti-smoking campaigners have welcomed the study as further proof of the need to clamp down on the habit.

About 13,000 Scots a year die of lung cancer and other smoking-related diseases, such heart illnesses. Another 1,600 people die in Scotland each year from the cancers newly linked to the habit.

The Scottish Government last month unveiled controversial new plans to curb smoking, by proposing a ban on cigarettes being displayed in shops. And ministers south of the border have suggested scrapping packs of 10 cigarettes because of their popularity among young smokers.

The new study, which has been published in the journal Annals of Oncology, was carried out by a team led by experts at Glasgow University and was based on data from 17,363 male civil servants based in London.

Information about their health and habits has been collated since the 1960s in an effort to gain information about health trends and find links between lifestyle and illness. The original link between smoking and lung cancer was found through similar analysis of medical data.

The study found:

• A 43% increase in the chances of dying from cancer of the colon if the person smokes.

• A 40% higher likelihood of dying from rectal cancer.

• An increase of 23% in the chances of losing one's life to prostate cancer.

• A 53% rise in mortality from lymphatic leukaemia among smokers.

Meh i'll stop when i'm not young anymore

I think that sometimes a wake up call is needed,

About 18 months ago my grandma was diagnosed with cancer,

I quit smoking that day and havn't touched a cigarette since,

You have done the first week OP, everything now is much easier, keep it up

Dont know about anyone else buy this short video http://www.2minutes.org.uk/ really gets me thinking about smoking and heart attacks to the point i feel like im going to have a panic attack/heart attack. I can't watch the video again because im scared it might trigger something off. I read this thread earlier today, and i sincerley hope the OP makes a full recovery. I aint smoked a single fag today despite having a 10 pack right next to the keyboard. I'll admit that it's pathetic that it takes something like this story, or a gruesome video to hammer it into a smokers head.

thanks for your relies guys, been a somewhat different week to say the least. The drugs i have to take daily asprin, Plavix, Beta Blockers and Simvastatins have been really screwing my head the past few days.

Been a bad year as my step father had a triple heart bypass in March due to blood clot and although the heart bypass was a success and was healing he actually didn't make it after due to his lungs - again a life of smoking had produced brittle lung disease meaning his lungs wouldn't absorb the oxegen required to keep him alive. It was back then that i was nagged by my mum to quit and i like most just believe that something like this it isn't going to happen to you or if it is your going to be old and lived a good innings in the 1st place - this just isn't true. My wife smokes and even now after seeing my step dad and now me she still has ciggies (not near me), i mean what the hell more can be done. Its an addiction / a drug - the government should just ban it totally - think of the lives saved / improved

Get well soon.

I think it has done the trick to stop you smoking. Sometimes I think it will take this to happen to my mrs to make her stop, but I certainly hope it doesn't. I will use other ultimatums, like not buying a house with her, and saying marriage will never happen whilst she is still a chimney pot :D

Sorry to hear about the heart attack mate, I don't think it will scare anyone to stop smoking though, I have noticed that smokers do seem to have a "it won't happen to me" way of thinking, Take my mother In-law for instance who hasnt given up after she watched her mum die of cancer caused by smoking and seen that her husband has had to give up as he had the famous smokers cough. My mum also has not given up and she suffers from severe asthma and her father died of emphasema caused by smoking, I fear that i will have to watch my mother die much earlier than normal because of smoking but she won't listen to reason.

Then again i am morbidly obese (according to my BMI) so i suspect if i don't sort myself out now i will end up with heart problems.

I had a Heart Attack last Sunday, didn't realise at the time and not being what i regard as "that old" put it down to indigestion. 5 hours of fairly intense pain before wife lost it and phoned ambulance.

Blood test later with positive for heart damge :(, angiogram followed by angipplasty surgery after blocked artery. Told on operation table " a warning shot - 2nd chance of life". Fixed by drug eluding stent, out of hospital next day.

No1 reason - Smoking, i smoke 20 odd a day, roll ups. Consider myself to be fittish if a little overweight but then only 39.

Not had a cig for 7 days and will never have another again. Certainly something like that brings things into perspective and a family that could have been without their Dad.

Am recovering, Doctor just signed me off for 3 weeks. Cardio Rehab to follow.

wish my missus would listen to advice, she drinks everyday and smokes loads. Unfortunately most smokers and drinkers are very selfish people and do not think about the people they leave when theres a problem or death.

On a side note, i wish you a speedy recovery and im glad your ok. take up golf or walking. My dad had a heart attack(non smoker) but did when he was younger stopped when he was 30 had a attack at 55ish hes now fitter than ever.

she probably wont care

I hope you make a full recovery and enjoy another chance.

That 2 minute thing is really scary.

I do smoke, I'm stupid

Hope you get well soon

As an ex smoker of 3 weeks, your post has moved me even more to keep stopped, but it is hard work some days :(

Maybe we should have the "Official - I have quit fags and need love and support" thread... :)
