4870 vs 260 maxcore

I'd probably go with the GTX260 216, from experience with my GTX280 the drivers are great and from various overclocking threads i've read the GTX260 does overclock more then a HD4870.

Thats got to be the funniest thing I've seen so far today (until I fire up the Jimmy Carr DVD my brothers picked up later on).

Agreed.

260 core 216 beats any 4870 it was nVidia's 4870 killer and it worked...
the overclocked ones can get better FPS than a 280 at stock and there around 100-120 quid cheaper...

im getting the BFG one on saturday..

That will be a sweet upgrade from an 8600GT :D

Why?

I can't say i've ever had a problem with ATi's drivers in all the cards i've owned. nVidia on the other hand, well I don't enjoy spending time with a new card trying multiple packages to see which one works best for my configuration/game/colour of walls in the front room.

The last green card I had was an 8800GT. Amazing card, until you applied AA. NFSC would just crash if you tried it. AoE3 went into wireframe mode - hilarous but not really what i'm looking for.

I also had an FX5200 - that only worked with one out of every two driver packages. The others would just keel over with BSODs.

Before that it was a GF2GTS - and that would only install with the drivers on the supplied CD. If I tried to update them it would tell me it couldn't detect any video card!

Don't get me wrong - nVidia's cards are good. Given the die size i'm impressed they've managed to keep all the GTX cards silent, and cool. And faced with ATi giving them a pasting with the 4870, their response has been really good, matching them with both the old GTX260 and the new one.

But I honestly believe they should leave the drivers to the red team.

Surely if anything, the most common problems with the 48** cards are driver related. You just need to do a search or look around on this forum to see the amount of problems. There's no where near as many related to the 260/280.

Well given the initial uptake of the 4870, it's hardly surprising there are going to be problems. Also I think a lot of people (no names) bought the 4870 but haven't set it up properly, then as soon as problems start they put up a thread bashing the card without trying to solve the issues.

Your driver issues are not the norm with nvidia...

The only outstanding issues are some systems only work in 4bit color mode after installing nVidia drivers - but this can easily be worked around... and the display driver stopped responding error and 9 times out of 10 this isn't a driver issue at all but instability with another hardware component - usually memory or northbridge.

The 8800GT handles FSAA fine in most games for most people - I've not tried or have any experience with AOE3 and FSAA - but it works flawlessly with everything else.

Does the driver release schedule not bother you at all? The fact that you can go for months without an official update?

Driver release schedule is fine by me - when a new game comes out that requires an update they've usually had a new driver out just before or at the game release.

It really grates with me - strikes me that nVidia don't really care much about their users once they've bought the card. But then again, everyone has their own interpretations of the situation.

Not to mention you rarely ever *need* a driver update, it's just small framerate improvements for benchmarks.

You're saying this like it's a bad thing? Surely any update, no matter how small, is a good thing?

Depends if they got it right first time or not.. If it's severly broken, then an update is required, but for the hassle of reinstalling graphics drivers it's quite nice to just install one set and for them to work! Almost none of them are the difference between unplayable and playable anyway.

Thats just ATI brainwashing...

Can you find a quote for that?
As updates are seen as a good thing for almost anything in life by most people, so i would really like to see a link from you to back up that statement that that ati owners only think updates are good because ATI said so.

Hey we must all turn off all our SW that auto updates including Windows Updates or has updates on a regular biases because it a brainwashing measure.

as some people obviously have no imagination...

That was said tongue in cheek inferring that ATI needed constant updates to fix their cards and to cover for it were telling customers that a lack of updates (nvidia) was a bad thing.

I did not mean it in an absolute sense.
