10 worst goalkeepers in England's top division

:S

Srnicek (sp?) was terrible, he used his feet more than his hands and conceded more goals than I can remember due to stupid "tricks" and attempting to dribble.

Exactly! I remember when Newcastle had Hislop in goal and were racing away for the title. Then Srnicek got put in and he kept making mistakes and Newcastle dropped points. He was awful in my opinion! Any Newcastle fans care to comment on him?

Yeah, me. It's total crap to say he's on of the worst keepers ever in the Premier League, as I've said he was decent.

In 95/96 we finished 2nd with the 3rd best defence iirc, and Pav played half a season or something.

In 94/95 we finished 6th and Pav played the whole season with something like W: 25 D: 14 L:11, in all competitions.

In 93/94 we finished 3rd with him in goal for most of the season.

As I have said before, it is unfair to judge Gomes on 14 performances this season. It is obvious that performances have been disappointing to date, but then so has the whole team. Confidence is low, so therefore its an unfair assessment on his ability.

All goalkeepers make mistakes but the times that the keeper saves his team outweigh the mistakes in the long run. His poor clearance against Liverpool was an error and we were fortunate to get away with it, but he made up for that with his brilliant fingertip save from Gerrards deflected shot, it essentially allowed us to win the game.

His error in the Udinese game was again down to his kicking, but at then compare that to his performance against Chelsea, he pretty much won us our point there.

I wouldnt class the guy as one of the worst ten this early on, lets not forget when he was at PSV he held countless records for clean sheets, which is hardly the accolade that comes with a poor keeper.

All the best keepers have made errors, Schmeichel did (I still remember his banana kick in the League Cup). Seaman was another one, lobbed on countless occasions when it looked easier to save it.

Paul Jones? Thats a very harsh inclusion. He had some incredible performances playing for Southampton. He barely made any mistakes at all. How you can have him in there and not Jon Lukic or Pavel Srnicek is beyond me.

I agree, Paul Jones at Soton was outstanding, fair enough his last performance for wales was a shambles but that was 2006 when he'd left the prem, about 4 years after him being first choice at Southampton

I agree. He needs to be in that top 10.

As for Gomes, how can they put him in the 10 worst goalkeepers in England's top division EVER? He's only played... what 15 games for them?

Haven't you seen him? He's literally been that bad.

Haven't you seen him? He's literally been that bad.

I've seen him in a couple of games. He's an alright shot stopper but can't come and collect the ball for toffee. I can imagin there being 10 worse goalkeepers then him though in the top division of all time :D

He just reminds me of David James playing in Europe for Liverpool in the mid-90s, he was completely hopeless on crosses, they would come sailing in and he'd just go and flap at them for no apparent reason leaving his net practically unguarded.

In other words, a liability. Yes you see top keepers make mistakes every now and then too (say, David Seaman) but deep down you still have faith and confidence in them. With the likes of James and now Gomes, deep down you know that sooner or later they are going to do something stupid again.

Disagree with you on Fülöp - I think he's a very good keeper who's had one or two poor games for Sunderland.

Umlaut overload:eek:..... Anyway I wouldn't go as far as to say Fulop was a very good keeper. Average is more what springs to mind when i see him play. He communicates with the back four a lot more than Gordon and seems to enjoy himself, and you can't really judge him on the one gamne against Chelsea. I still think Darren Ward has been a bit harshly treated to be bombed out like he was...I know he's injured right now though

Leighton always freaked me out with the big dollop of grease or vaseline he always had over his eyes. Ive never seen any other keeper do that and im still not sure what it was in aid of.

Gomes isnt a bad keeper.
He's having a tough time at the moment by the looks of it. But he was stunning for PSV, especially in the CL.

Exactly... you don't suddenly become abysmal overnight, Gomes was quality for PSV and a firm favourite with the fans. He put Spurs out of the UEFA Cup last season!

I think the mixture of changing countries, league, into a team struggling and also carrying an injury has hit his confidence. He's then tried too hard to compensate and just made things worse.

Give him time and he'll come good for us imho.
