Car Tax

I've just had a renewal through for the end of the month 220 for 6 months or 400 for 12. Don't see how I can benefit unless its going up even more?

I actually dont know if you are allowed to tax a car which is already taxed

you can if you argue with the post office guy...
the computer will say no but they can override it. as for some reason it said my car had tax when it clearly didn't. I told them I needed tax and after a while they overrode the system..

ours goes up from £400 to £440

so hardly worth the effort. Fox's big problem is that his was previously in the £210 band (highest band for a car not registered after 06), but due to them backdating the tax brackets its now in the £440 bracket ours is in.

I thought that the £210 was being stepped up incremently:confused:
£300 for 12 months from March 09 and then the full £440 from March 10.

That'll be £440 for the Audi, about £185 for the Ka (wife's) and £66 for the gixxer.
I hardly use the bloody car as well.

you've missed the way it works.

the £210 tax band previously applied to cars with more than 186 g/km Co2. There was a band G that was for cars with over 226g/km CO2, but this only applied to cars registered after 23/3/06

Thus Fox's 51 plate 530 could only be taxed at band F. WHich was £210 a year for cars with more than 186 g/km

Problem is however, is that Fox's Co2 is actually 229 g/km. Now under the new tax bands, the band for over 226 g/km now applies to every car after Y plate, thus Fox's tax now goes from £210 to £415.

So the £210 tax band, which is for over 186 g/km is still there (except now amended to over 180 g/km) , but goes up to £260 a year next year, and £270 a year after that.

THe £210 tax band, will never be £400. The problem is that there were cars that were above the £210 tax band but were exempted. But they've now backdated the F tax band to include pre 2006 vehicles.

just a small note, my vectra is 250 g.km so is only £415 a year tax now. Just narrowly missing the 255 band which is £440 a year. Way to go me for a £25 a year (£2.08 a month. alltogether now wooooooooohhhhhh)

Thanks, not worth bothering with then.

Err, no - he is correct. They are kind-of doing it in stages for older cars - next year my car will cost £300 to tax, then from 2010 it will hit the top amount as it's in the top band.

how is he correct ?

the 2009 band for more than 226 g/km (your 530i is 229) is £415 ?

hence why fox is going on about saving his £200, not £100.

Ollys car is 250something IIRC.

I'm not entirely sure how much it will cost next year. Half the internet thinks £300, the other half thinks £415. There is confusion over whether post 2001 stuff goes directly into Band Aids or not.

The Treasury has said but not officially confirmed that cars emitting over 226g CO2/km but bought before Budget 2006 will move into Band K in 2009/10 - and will continue to benefit from a reduced rate, and only in 2010/11 will these cars be placed into the band that corresponds to the car's actual CO2 emissions.

Hmm...

Who knows what'll happen - not even sure the government do at the moment!

well this was a big issue when it first arrived, everybody up in arms

Trouble is, its not news anymore, so ive got a feeling the government may well just leave it as per the budget announcement

another backtrack would be very embarassing.

I'm still very unhappy about the retrospective car tax band changes. My car is at the top of one of the middle bands and I was quite happy being taxed on emissions on this basis.

When the bands get changed I will be paying more tax per year, although increases in tax are to be expected it should really be in line with inflation or with the other cars in my old band not swapped about to make the government more money.

What is really annoying is they have set a standard now. In another 4 years the emissions on my car will be comparatively even higher compared to the new cars coming out. Guess what will happen, they will re jig the bands, I will be in a more polluting band and I will be taxed more. You can't win with one of the earlier, and hence likely to be more polluting cars taxed by emission. The only way forward for me now is going to be a car from before the emission bands (6.0 litre Jag?).
