Is this a good deal for £4000....

Argh! I defo want a VW and I've only got 6k max, but everything I find people seem to find good reason for me not to get it lol.

I'm officially stuck and the most indecisive fool ever lol

By a Leon? Golf underneath, cheaper, better....

You can pick up an 02 plate Cupra for £3500 now, 180 ponies, loads of change and it's a nice enough place to be.

Why you getting rid of the 1.9 golf?

Sadly it was written off last month. Otherwise I would have kept it until it stopped going. It was on 130k and was still mechanically perfect.

My last 2 cars have been VW's and if I'm honest I don't like the feel of much else.

I will not buy a Vauxhaul or a Ford purely because I've driven most of them and didn't rate them compared to the VW's.

£4000 for a 1.6 Golf? Ace...

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not :/

I don't want anything that powerful because my Mrs won't want to drive it. :( We can't afford to run 2 cars at the moment.

Don't understand the whole has to be a golf thing, have a look at the mk2 Focus, much better than a mk4 Golf.

The "OMFG LOW MILEAGE IT MUST BE ******" comments are about as useful as saying that a car has had it when it hits 100k. It doesn't always mean that its been used for 3.5 miles a day every day of the week and will be covered in battle scars.

I agree, but with it being owned by a 90 year old from new going on past experience of cars owned by older people more often than not they are often worn in certain areas (the car, not the old person :)) . Crap wording on my part but you get what I mean!

How many 90 year olds do you know trundle up and down the motorway? :p

Very true. A neighbour of mine can barely drive. I'm not sure of his age but he is around 70-80 ish. His driveway isn't straight and watching him go over his own lawn and all over the place reversing plus the nice dents and scrapes on the front corners of the bumper don't look too encouraging. Oh and apparently he has some risk of passing out or something, so I hope he stops driving soon. However he does only go down to the shop and back which is about 1/4 mile away.

Yea its perfectly possible that it was bought brand new, as a bottom of the range 1.6 S with windup windows, and used only for the once a month 300 mile Motorway trip, the rest of time it laid perfectly cared for in a heated garage.

Not.

Get real. This car has crashed around town, done short trips, and spent long periods of time laid up doing nothing.

Add to that it will not have been rev'd in it's pathetic life, probably never seeing more than 2.5k and never ever warming the oil up. The tyres will be by Nankang and Linglong, if not remolds and the wheels will have interfaced with the curb on a regular basis.

I bought a 1990 mk2 golf in 2001 with 60k on the clock and it took exactly 1500 miles for the head gasket fail. It had been owned by two women from the same family from new, on who was in her 80's. Not good.

Good to see the Golfs are still holding their value - great news for me come the upgrade :D

Also - OP - why will the missus not drive a "powerful" car - and how will she even know if she's not flooring it? :) for 6K max maybe look at a Mk4 1.8T?

You can have my golf for £3500 :D Low mileage, careful owner etc etc :D

I would aim for a 1.8T if the insurance lets you mate if you really want another Golf.

This is OCUK, don't you know that 150k cars are always in far better condition than brand new ones? They get trailered to motorways where they sit at 60mph for 100 miles per day, that's how they rack up their miles. None have ever been used in town, that would be unthinkable.

My Elise is a 2004 and has done 11k, it's immaculate throughout.
My TT is a 2003 and has done 36k, it's immaculate througout.

I can't wait to add another 100k to both of them, they're gonna be concours by then.

What a crap post.

Surely you can see what people are saying here? Your Elise is an obvious candidate for a weekend car, kept lovingly in a garage and only ever used properly. Its that sort of car. It's low mileage is easily explained by the fact that its an Elise, and many Elises like yours have similar mileage. It's use as a comparator here is thus irrelevent.

A Golf 1.6 is not a weekend car. A Golf 1.6 owned by a 90 year old gentlemen doubly so.

Nobody is telling him to go and buy a 150k mile Golf instead, people are just warning him not to be seduced by the fact it has 22k on it because in this particular case its far more likely to be a bad thing than a good thing. I must remember to get some photographs of my Grans Matiz next time I visit - it really is in truely hysterical condition for a 3k mile 57 plate car (Well it would be hysterical were I not genuinelly concerned it really is time the keys got hung up permanently).

You need to be a little more keen to post stuff thats vaguely useful and a little less keen to rush in with your usual, rather limited, list of sly and lolworthy digs at other members on this forum.
