Average Salary/Good Salary

The private sector will on average pay better than the public

This is no longer true - the most recent stats show a few £00s per year nod to the public sector. Once you take into account the index linked 100% secure pension...makes you wonder why anybody works in the private sector....wait, that's right, we work in the private sector to pay the wages for the public sector

Average outside of London is about £20k, I'm very average.

Me too! Had the relevant experience for a much better job as an investment consultant but I don't have A level maths :( I done all the work you'd do at A level in my degree! KPMG will have to do.

It's really harsh how some companies do that, but after you have some experience that lack of an Alevel maths should go away. Whilst wasting their teenage years studying maths whilst you where out partying never will! lol

Good is relational. When I was 10, pocket money of £3 a week was good. When I was 18, £6 an hour was good.

Typically, 'good' is probably 3 or 4k more than you are earning at any given time :)

Surely 23k or so cannot be average? I would have thought it was closer to 30? and then good from 50-60?

If you want the official figures they are here:

The average for men is £521 per week no less!

I would class a good salary as being £120k and over.

The average there is also the median salary. So there goes the argument most people have more than the average number of feet.

Well off depends on your family. If you support a family of 5, then I would say confortable is around 60k in London. On your own? 40k would be well off.

In the south, I reckon 40k would be a reasonable salary to provide a comfortable standard of living with enough for the occasional luxury.

Although, if you want to live in nicer areas in a decent sized house with a new car and like a few holidays a year, then 50-60k is more suitable, especially if you live alone.

I have no idea about the north. In Northern Ireland, you could take 10k off both of those.

I'm 23, I live in London, I earn £35k and I feel incredibly poor all the time. £35k in London is very average to low.

Well you live alone and therefore would live in a flat? So should still be comfortable. The very best graduate jobs have starting salaries of £35k - £40k, so I dont think that amount is bad.

lol what, thats huge, is it really £6 a pint in London and £300k for 2 up 2 down terraced house.

Never understand these questions, its like saying is £19k a good wage, depends on how you live, you could live off £10k in some areas. Depends if you want savings, lavish lifestyle, pension etc.

Hah, it's not £6 a pint but £300k won't get you a nice 1 bedroom flat in a good location, nevermind a 2 up 2 down terraced house!

I live off £38k at the moment in London and I certainly don't feel well off but I am comfortable. It's certainly not low to average though.

Top 40% of all UK households (majority with a single earner) earn roughly 40k or more. Add some wage price inflation fro 2 years and should get rough figures for today.

The difference between original and final income for all households, is roughly the net revenue the government gets from national insurance and income taxes.

Some crazy figures flying around here.

I think its possible to live a very comfy life at £30k outside of London, perhaps add £5k for the South East.
