New Apple 24" ACD, possibly IPS, definite LED backlight and DisplayPort

Daft question, but the cables in the pics don't look like PC conectivity, or is there some fancy convertor to DVI or VGA etc etc?

I've not looked at the Apple displays before, as you can gather.

Also this says it has a built in cam, and mic, would they be usable with a pc too, or is that just going to be when used with a mac?

Thanks

Nick

You'll need a graphics card with displayport out from what I can see, since DP and DVI are completely different protocols over the wire. Expect to start seeing more of these hit the market now more monitors have them (and Apple seem to be going completely over to them), IIRC the latest ATI reference designs for the 4xxx line had DP.

Apple have gone for a mini-dp rather then the regular DisplayPort.

I looked at the pictures and compare the port on the MacBook/Pro with the USB then definitely not a normal DisplayPort.

Personally gutted as was looking at pairing a MBP with the 3008WFP and using the DisplayPort. Regular DisplayPort is about the same size as a USB, but these mini-dp are smaller. No adaptor either yet.

May just have to splash some cash for one these now.:(

Nice, LED backlighting is a major step forward.

I paid £850 for my 2405 in 2005 and it's due an upgrade... :D

You are right. They aren't standard connectors (are they ever with Apple?), but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a DVI or Displayport adaptor or something for use with proper graphics cards.

And by the looks of things. The Camera/Mic as connected by USB, so assuming there are Windows drivers for them, they should work on a PC too.

There are DVI, Dual Link DVI for 30" monitor and VGA Adaptors available. Would have been perfect if they made a mini-dp to DisplayPort adaptor as well.

any update on this , ie anyone got there hand on one to confirm a thing or two ? ips or not etc

Saw one on the apple store in brum, and I'm almost positive it's IPS. Definitely not TN with the viewing angles and almost positive it's not VA as no contrast shift (couldn't load up lagom.nl to do the gamma shift test though).

kk thanks for update is it still only mini DP or is there a way to hool it up to a normal DVI port

its pretty much the only one available in that size thats LED so I'd go for it if I had the money... looks good too

Its a really cool monitor, When I get my new MacBook Pro (if and when a new 17" is available), I'll be getting one, I do hope they bring out more cable options though, although it looks hardwired!!

Hopefully they have one a Bluewater today

I was in the Apple store here in Belfast the other day and had a quick look at this monitor and I must admit that I was very impressed by it. As you would expect from Apple the build quality was very good and it really looked the part.

The reflections from the glossy finish were noticeable but in that environment you would expect so with the shop lighting, etc!

I asked one of the shop staff about what type of panel it uses but they didn't have a clue except it was LED.

I browsed some photographs and played a few movie clips and there was no noticeable lag / ghosting. One thing that I would say is that the images did appear to be quite vibrant but I don't know whether that is due to LED technology or that it is a high gamut!

Overall its a quality screen but at £635 it may not be that much better than my Hazro 24" ;), especially without HDMI.
