On the contrary I find the concept of a 1 litre Polo paying less road tax than a 1.8T Polo rather stupid.

I find it rather good myself.

Why shouldn't they? They take up similar road space, they cause the same congestion and they do similar damage to the roads. You pay more to run the thirstier ones as you pay more fuel tax.

I actually agree with you, although it doesnt come across that way.
Its the same with bikes over/under 600cc, physically they are all pretty much the same size and all probably have fairly similar mpg figures.

My mate pays more for his 636cc Kawasaki than I pay for my 599cc Yamaha, even though the bikes are very similar.

I think I will buy an African country and get myself one of those tankers that those chaps 'borrowed'. No speed limits or laws, loads of guns, free oil and some rhino meat what more could a man want.

Shame nowt will run on the oil from the tanker or your plan was foolproof!

 on the fuel increase, should have seen that coming....

What the hell.. 2 pence rise in fuel duty? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I ever find that bloke.. I'm going to remove his black eyebrows with a scalpol!!

It only puts back on what the VAT cut takes off.

I'm glad about the band K result, but the wording is a bit dubious to me. It only mentions 2010, so what happens in 2011?

Ah good stuff they dropped that stupid tax increase, but not so good news on the 2p rise :( Really glad I didnt bother getting 6 month tax trying to get a refund by Sorning it.

Business can claim the VAT back. I work in vehicle recovery, and claim back the VAT. Business that use vehicles in one way or another need all the assistance they can get or they just going to have to lay off workers or put price increases onto customers.

If it's a big haulege company, then it would be interesting to see how things would work out.

Diesel is still very expensive and this is not welcome at all.

I'm surprised he did this at the moment. Businesses are now getting hit with a 2.6%* increase in fuel cost (if they're VAT registered) which is going to hurt those with fuel costs as one of their main expenses.

*Based on unleaded at 90p/l

I don't think it'll bother me paying about 20p extra for a tank of fuel.

Actually that is a very good point, I forgot to take businesses in to account. :o

If you look at the pre-budget report (page 141) you will see they plan on increasing fuel duty again in April 2009 by 1.84 pence per litre and again by 0.5 pence per litre above indexation in April 2010.

It even says "the cost of petrol and diesel will fall for private motorists who should see no increase in the price they pay at the pump this year from this measure." So yes they have screwed the business user.

On page 140 it also says "cars that emit over 225 g/km, but were registered between 1 March 2001 and 23 March 2006, will be moved into the new band K in 2009 and stay there in 2010."
Thats what I was talking about above, it only mentions 2010 so who knows what will happen in 2011.

I was going to take Nick's 330d as the amount of smoke that was laying down at Donington the other year suggest he's running it on crude. :D

Vroom! :D

I don't understand how cars can now pay £0 road tax. Since when is it fair that road tax be weighed completely on emissions? Cars with low emissions still need parking spaces and still degrade road surfaces.

As already said, I feel for the haulage firms should duty on fuel rise. They're the ones who get hit the most.

The company I work at had to lay off workers over the summer and I had my hours cut. All down to the price of fuel as the bills were massive and there was a reduction in traffic on the roads.

Obviously the reduction in fuel itself is always good and our bills even with this fuel duty rise shouldn't be as bad as what they were over the last 12 months, but it's hardly helpful. The government should be supporting businesses like this as the more fuel costs the more pressure it's put on to business or passed on to the consumer.

Had fuel duty been frozen for next 12 months then I'd be more open to this budge. Obviously we'll all find out over the coming months if this helps the UK economy or not.

I'm disturbed by the fact you fancy a piece of Rhino meat, but what ever floats your boat
