OcUK topics - why are some friendly than others?

Okay so I'm a long time member here and I've been away for a year or so. But does anyone ever wonder why the attitude of posters varies so dramatically between areas? Now we all know GD is OcUK's version of a mosh pit. But why the difference between the areas on specific matters - it wasn't like that in the past.

I'll present my case:

So here we are in "Servers and Enterprise Solutions" and a someone (clearly been around OcUK for a while posts a question about some (ooollllddd) server hardware. The guy gets a load of stick for nothing, my post is polite of course. But on average a lot of useful comments, with some nonesense thrown in.

In this one I reply, the guy has figured out his own problem, but I post a few tips.

This is my own post, about wanting to buy a new car. Thought I'd check with the OcUKer's about whats a decent bet. This is no different than "spec me a computer" thread in GH so why all the negativity in their posts. Whats more surprising that the really useful most was by a guy called Lam who'd just joined and had 11 posts!

Why does it vary so much? Confuses me! Generally I find GH such a great place to find advice and (ignoring Lum and Axeboy) Motors grade A useless, give us some ideas for the difference? Perhaps
[1] People in GH are just friendly people
[2] People in Motors haven't had any "lady time" for a while

Online forums always have a variety of people posting. Experiences and general knowledge reach the extremes. This is no longer an overclocking and hardware enthuisast site (IMO) but more geared up towards everyone as its a shop forum. This shows in some of the responses you get and the variety of forum types :)

I also think that society in general gives out more negative responses than postive. Its the 'norm'.

Some peeps are very helpful and give good information freely. Other posts you just give them the time vs thought ratio. No content, scroll past!

Watch this thread turn from discussion into arguements ;)
 
90% of the people in servers and enterprise work in IT or are at work while posting i bet, so they will be understandably bitter :p

id say the vast majority of drivers are bitter people, probably due to lack of exercise and caring too much about a tiny dent on there motors :p

programmers do such a boring job that stopping for 30seconds to most is such a joyful experience :)

that explains those 3 posts, whats next? :p

Motors has a billion spec me a car threads and 9 times out of 10 the original poster ends up going with a car they had already decided on before posting. Even if they get loads of advice saying how bad it is they very rarely listen.

I've posted a few threads asking for car advice and always found a postive outcome, just have to keep your options open.
 
Yes you all have good points of course. But I guess it's like I'd give 10 minutes writing a decent response (looking up specs, grabing a book) for someone who looks like they need a bit of advice, and then you go into another room, and you get responses with the net content of "lol"

if youve been here as long as you say - then surely you know about certain regular posters and what they're like?

when i specced a car a while back i was given really good advice by one and all - god bless em. :D
 
Generally, you'll find that the rule of thumb is: Ask a silly question, get a silly answer. A most posts in the GH section are serious, they tend to have straight answers. GD gets more than its fair share of absolute idiocy and hence why people like to ridicule others with spam and Jesus.

Then of course, you have a healthy dose of cliques and fan-boys who roam the forums and in this group, Motors is no exception.
 
Surfer, glad they did mate. I passed on details to Johnny G like I say, including details on my transactions on the MM so if I'd never been on here, it should be pretty simple to figure out one way or another!
