4870 vs 8800GTX

I have the 88gtx, and I have decided it is not worth it. If the gtx can aply everything you want bar crysis at full settings I'd leave it.

Depends, at 1920x1200 an 8800GTX certainly isn't so hot these days and that's not just for Crysis, the 4870 is considerably faster.

As above, if you game at 1680 or lower, don't bother, you won't notice much of a difference. I had one, sent it back a day later for that very reason.

well i had 8800gts g92 witch is not so far behind gtx and upgraded to 4870 1 gig well u notice some performance on 1680 but i say its not worth it. at least u really hardcore at gaming and need upgrade every new gen cards.

i suggest wait till 2009 see what it brings should be some nice cards by the sounds of things

my 4870 flies through everything on max bar crysis and Far Cry 2 - actually it even drags its heals badly through WoW in places (11fps once lol). My old 8800GTS seemed to perform better lol and that was a G80 chip!

Apart from Crysis/Warhead and few bad Console Ports it will still be fine with AA+AF at 1920's.

To have held onto a GTX this long and then swap now when newer cards could be here Dec/Feb is madness if youre not struggling.

Cheers

Thanks and was not going to even bother "coming Back" had more time to do other things in past month but typing skills need practice.

I read something weeks ago about Nvidia and some Movie playback software but cant remember exactly as I have been benching new hardware so not actually using PC as it runs all day and night.

Don't bother, although the 4870 is faster, don't know about in Crysis and Farcry though, it sucks badly in Farcry and Crysis, well in Crysis it ain't so bad actually, 4xAA playable in parts.

Well that's not the case with the benchmarks I have seen.

A lot of them I've seen have had the 8800GT which is comparable, but even the 8800GTX benchmarks have been outshined by the 4870 by some distance.

At 1920x1200 the 8800GTX doesn't cut it so well anymore at all, I know my 8800GT doesn't and by looking at benchmarks the GTX is is in the sub 40's more often than not.

The GTX is a quicker card than the GT,GT works off a 256bit interface whereas the GTX is 384bit and therefore provides a higher bandwidth.

Using a GTX myself and it's coping perfectly well with the latest games at 1920x1200,even Crysis and Warhead play well at the same res with most settings maxed but without AA.

The 4870 may allow the use of more AA but not really worth the upgrade imo, especially as new GPU's are imminent.

Is every-one insane? or is there just load of GTX fanboys in here. Its hell of a lot quicker @ 1680*1050.

I went from an 8800GTX to a 4870 and would say in general gaming and benching its around 40% quicker, add another 4870 (CF) and you get even more.

Dont listen to these "my 9600GT is all you need" fanboys. If you want faster buy better! This is gettin silly now, first it was should I Crossfire my 4870 - no its not worth it. Now its 4870vs8800GTX - 4870 isnt worth it!!

From my own perspective, the GTX hasn't yet fallen short of what I require of it,which is good framerates in the latest games at 1920x1200.

The OP'r should ask himself if his gaming experience is suffering because of the GTX not providing enough performance,if he can honestly answer yes, then a 4870 1GB or 260 GTX 216 would offer a good increase.

I don't think anyone here is trying to dissuade the op'r or other posters for that matter from upgrading, but unless his GTX is really struggling which I doubt, and with new GPU's just around the corner,it may be prudent to wait a while.
