wife just been molested

Get in touch with the British Embassy or consulate - explain the situation and ask if there is someone who can go and see her - for her piece of mind. Then they will speak to the hotel etc and can arrange for her to move rooms and be escorted by hotel security. Thats the easiest way eahead at this stage.

I would also ask the employer to move her to much nicer part of town.

There isn't a nice part. Whilst it's a friendly city, it's a dirty, diesel filled concrete-fest with clouds of crows and stray dogs everywhere.

The nicest part of town when I was there was the hotel room, pretending I wasn't in Colombo.

She should only get taxis for travel to and from the hotel organised by the hotel.

Sucks but she needs to be safe. I would also say that the boss cannot fire her over this. She has been abused whilst working in another country and no correction to the situation was forth coming so returned to the uk. I am pretty sure employment tribunal would side with you every time.

My sister has lived in Sri Lanka for many years including in columbo and hasn't had similar problems. I don't know if this is useful information but she dresses in a style which you could call half western and half local.

If she wont come home you go over there I would.

Also it doesn’t matter what country it is if she is wandering about in a two piece bikki of coarse she is going to get harassed. Its a sad fact.

Tell her to cover up & problem will be solved.

You're in a torturous situation I sympathize - if you can get over there it may do you some good mentally however if you cannot and she won't can't return you have to trust her to stick with fellow workers.

My exwife went through a terrible ordeal many years back and it's affects both the female in question and her husband/partner - I hope (all things considered) she is "okay".

Her boss isn't responsible for making sure the entire country treats her right. It's like saying my boss is responsible if I go out into town dressed sexy and get my butt felt my a woman. Just being abroad doesn't change the boss's responsibility to go beyond work borders.

What if your boss made you go and set up a street stall in the middle of the Bronx?

I'd partially agree but from what the original post suggests it is training for work, paid for by work so without work she would not be in Sri Lanka or at least probably not under the terms that she is. That puts it as being a bit more of an unusual circumstance and possibly something that her work should be considering/taking a greater duty of care over.

All I can say to the original post is best of luck in getting it sorted out, it isn't a good situation to be in. It does sound as if your wife should only be going out in company and keeping visits outwith the hotel to a minimum, it will doubtless be boring but probably better than the alternatives.

So what happened, what did you do?!

I told her she should come back, but shes sticking it out. The day after all this happened she arranged for her colleagues to meet at a McDs in town. She got a taxi there from a company recommended by her employers.

When she arrived her colleagues didn't show so she had to get back on her own. Her mobile doesn't work out there (and the taxi had left) so she got on one of the 'trike' taxis for the return journey. The driver tried to force 300USD out of her half-way through the journey after having already agreed a much smaller price in local currency.

So shes had a bit of a rough time of it tbh, but at least now all her colleagues from the UK are in the same hotel.

Her boss also got in touch with her after his first e-mail to say that training would be provided here in the UK if she wanted to come back ;)

Sounds like she had a bad time, but if her friends/colleagues are out there with her now there's a lot less to worry about and she doesn't have to lose her job over it. Hope everything works out.
