I7-965 My Early Thoughts

A QX9770 for £500 is a bargain though, I'd rather just get one of those for a noticable upgrade than a complete system overhaul.

Few more benchies. All done with a GTX260-216 (which arrived today thanks OCUK) + 180.48. Quite a big improvement from the previous ones due to the 260-216 vs 4850 especially as these are done on stock CPU not overclocked at all.

CPU speed was stock for now as its unstable overclocked on the Intel HSF on quiet fan mode (which these were done on) & Performance fan mode is a little bit louder. Temps are amazing considering that the room is very warm (central heating been on since 4PM) all I have done is remove the Intel TIM then replace for Arctic Ceramique and a 10C drop!

Next up will be some gaming benchies & when I get a better HSF some maximum air overclocking!

Also should add that for cd to mp3 ripping this thing is a beast!! 3-4 mins max (ripped my Ultimate Indiana Jones 5 CD soundtrack collection in under 20 mins and these contain slightly more tracks and running time than a normal CD around 75 mins each so its quick on that as well!!)

Some Gaming Benchies as promised

GTX260-216 @ stock clocks with 180.48 + I7-965 @ stock everything. All games tested @ 1920x1200 max detail for most (these screenies are halved to save bandwidth) . Lost Planet, Devil May Cry4, Assassins Creed & Left 4 Dead use multicore very well. Vista 32bit + SP1 fully up to date nothing disabled for benchmarking so with OS tweaks + XP + Intel's bios auto overlocking these results would be up to 10% higher as most are tested in DX10 mode as well (except for Sega Rally).

Lost Planet uses all 8 cores at all times and is very quick indeed!

Also tried Left 4 Dead, Bioshock, NFS Undercover & COD4 but no point posting as fraps was playing up and would not always take screenies with the FPS. Those games score between 80-135FPS depending on what part it is & how much detail onscreen (NFSU is worst as tops out around 56-62 FPS with no AA).

Assassins Creed:
Very smooth and some insane FPS here. Drops into the 60s in cities when its crowded & lot of characters on screen at once but still quite impressive FPS.

Devil May Cry4:
Very smooth. Only dropping when there is a lot of onscreen action & FX. That benchmark 4 is the same as Yewen ran with Tri-SLI!! http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12957423&postcount=7

Lost Planet Extreme Colonies Edition (has free Cross platform against 360 players & LIVE achievements plus is a fun arcade style Capcom blast-em-up). This game will take whatever hardware you throw at it and according to Intel it has almost perfect scaling with X58 + SLI, Tri-SLI or Crossfire so is a good benchmark to use.

Sega Rally:
Never drops below 60FPS and most of the time its around the 100-125 FPS mark. Fraps was really playing up for me so no FPS counters in these screenies. At these FPS game now has much better handling as the CPU is not struggling to keep up any more.

So as you can see X58 in games which use multicore is a worthy purchase & if you have more than 1 graphic card its the only choice if you want to unlock all the multigpu FPS as the scaling is superior to the earlier Intel CPU's.

intel stock cooler with a clear fan and blue LEDs on it?? wow, they're finally starting to get into the idea of us case pimpers ;)

You know whats funny, I had the cheapest i7 setup I could find in my basket for several days toying with the idea of buying, but it has gone up every day for the last 3 days. I guess decisions have to be made quickly when prices seem good, it changes from day to day lol.

Some Crysis Benchmarks

Crysis DX9 + DX10 @ 800x600 + 1920x1200 no aa. Shows DX10 still a fair way behind in this game. Game is actually very playable now @ 1920x1200 with or without x2AA. Could not run DX10 @ 800x600 in a window as it would not work due to a bug in the benchmark.

Crysis Warhead DX9 + DX10 @ 800x600 + 1920 x1200 no aa. DX10 still lagging badly but game is very playable @ 1920x1200 with or without AA. DX10 + 800x600 would work in a window in this benchmark!

When I get a Noctua HSF should be a lot quicker on multicpu games as its possible on air to get 4.5-4.7Ghz out of this CPU and that is a big FPS boost as every 133Mhz more makes a lot of difference as clock for clock cycles are more capable than Core2.

Not bothering with any encoding tests as have nothing I need to encode and its been proven by many benchmarks the I7 is the king of the hill on this anyway.

4.7GHz? CustomPC reviewed the i7's and reckoned 4.1GHz was about the max.

If you can get it to 4.7GHz then I know what I'll be buying with my bonus....
CustomPC=Epic Fail. Check out extreme system forums its full of cutting edge enthusiasts that are getting 4.7Ghz on air with decent ram for the 965 and around 4Ghz for 920 on air.
