Car auctions look like quite an attractive proposition for purchasing my next car through, but I'd only have bum luck and get some sheddy knackeredmobile.

I can't understand why this guy is posting this stuff on there. Is he a trader? If so why would he want to go round telling everyone how cheap he buys them in? I'm surprised he gets away with going round taking photo's and noting down prices of all the stock.

I really get tempted when i see things like this and hear about family members purchasing relatively new cars at such bargain prices so often. Then i realise that if you actually care about your car, want it to be perfect and want a decent spec then you've got a 1 in a million chance of making use of auctions

are these dealer auctions or can anyone from joe public walk along with money and buy?

2005 55 Jaguar X-Type 2.0D Sport. 84k. £4.600 SOLD

seriously yes please.

That caught my eye too. Less than the price of a new bottom of the range Vectra.

Thought the 2002 Lexus LS430 47k for just over £6k was a bit of bargain too. HUGE amount of car for the (less than a Ford Ka) money.

I think this is a crazy price (can't be right surely?):-

2006 06 Lexus IS220d 175bhp Saloon. £6,900 provisional

It's Housey if i'm not mistaken...

EDIT: oh, maybe not! I just thought it was because Housey must have copied the first Manheim report from PH's General Gassing section, to here!

"2006 06 Subaru Impreza 2.5 WRX 230bhp. 43k. £6,800 provisional"

GTFO.... jeepers! That is mental cheap.

Yeah but think of the amount of road tax and running costs you'd have to pay :p

Have to admit prices are going a bit crazy, better for me though as I'm in the market for another car just after crimbo :)

There is a large auction house down the road in Westbury. Had a scan through the auction list and had to laugh at these two in particular, from the Mobility section.

Nice low mileage anyone? First service @ 500 miles :p

Why is this still happening given the road tax rises next year are now no bigger than any other year?

Are all these cars perhaps being sold off by finance companies after people defaulted on the loan?

Also that S2000, aren't those the old pre facelift wheels on it? Or can you still get them with those?

People are losing their jobs or are in fear of losing their jobs so the car will be the first purchase off the list. It's not related in any way to car tax or fuel prices.

It's pure sentiment, if people considered they were well off because their house "made" £25k a year now find their house is actually costing them £25k a year, the mortgage rather than the car becomes the priority.

They look cheap now but they're only going to get cheaper!

Some points before we all get too excited.

a) Provisional means it's not sold. It didn't meet reserve. Getting excited over provisional bids is like finding a car on Ebay that went for £200 but didnt meet reserve. It didn't sell. Yes, some will be within offer region but it's impossible to say which were. I doubt that Impreza sold.

b) Buying at auction carries considerble risk which for many will outweigh the savings. Yes, a 2005 X-Type diesel for 5 grand. Good deal. Not so good if you drive it out of the site and realise the turbo isn't working and it needs 4 new injectors. You cannot test drive, you can't even root around under the bonnet and you can't inspect the cars. There is no warranty.

c) None of these prices list condition. We don't know whether that S2000 had been key'd half way down the side and needed and a grand worth of paint. Or whether it had 2 bald rear tyres, another £350. etc etc.

Yes, there are bargains and yes, many of those listed are indeed genuine bargains. But some may not be...
