HD4870 1gb vs. GTX 260-216

But it wont run properly on ati cards without the hotfix. THIS is the point, nvidia drivers are much better than ati ones.

Plus i game 8 hours a day if i have a day off, and i fold the other 16, folding on ati cards = fail.

Who said it WONT run properly on ATi cards? The Hotfix did not make one bit of difference on my rig so I beg to differ....

WHOA! Look at that GTX 260, it's like 1 or 2 frames above at best! NO WAY DUDE!

Wait, the 260 is below the 4870 at 1920x1200 and above, how about that! Crazy times.

#1 - Document is dated before NVidia released the 180.48 drivers which gave a substantial boost in performance.

#2- I mentioned my 260-192, not 216 at an OC of 710 core. Yes, stock they will be close but 260's major pulling factor is the huge OC headroom. People here have the 260-216 hitting 730+ core stable.

#3- Yes way 'dude' :p

Well I'm still pretty much decided on the 260-216, the overall package you get just seems better to me, support/drivers etc.

Also I dont know if its just be, but ATi stuff seems cheap looking somehow, i know its only packaging and design and doent dictate performance, but they look tacky/cheaply made somehow, and not well thought out. Puts me off non the less.

Well, to throw this spanner in the works, the box on my 4870 was more sturdy and slick than my 8800GT, at that moment I knew it would be a better card! HELL YEAH, better box = better card! WOO.

Not sure about that comment really, a graphics card is...a graphics card, my 4870 doesn't feel cheap or of any less quality than any other card I've had in the past, and I haven't had an ATi since 2003 odd.

Seems like an attempt to justify your upcoming purchase, fair enough by all means but please make it a fair reason that doesn't make you sound silly. :)

My 4870 box was bloody well packaged, was a solid box too I can stand on it and it don't hurt it, I only weight 11.5stone though.

Whats cheaper? Red or Green? I'm sure if ATi cards where Green too you would not be able to tell the difference straight off... :p

Here's an interesting comparison of cards, altho not particularly relevant to the OP it's made me think twice about changing my 9800GX2 for the GTX280 as it's on a par playing Crysis

the video shows 4 maxed out Crysis screens at the same time with ATI 4870 & Nvidia cards

Just a passing observation, dont take it personally ;)

I've never liked ATi much as I've said, I guess I could be finding reasons why not to buy 1, as I say tho these current crop of red cards have atleast taken my interest so thats a start :)

$329.99 for XFX GeForce GTX 260 Black Edition
$264.99 for cheap brand 4870 1gb (that review didnt show a make). Only checked 1 site that stocked them btw, so it may be difftent elsewhere :p

Is the 25% price increase worth the exra 3-4FPS ?

Reviews should really put a graph with prices at the bottom too lol.

read what i wrote, stock card vs stock card the gtx wins 3v2, i could only find the black review giving 8xaa performance graphs, just ignore the black and look at the stock gtx 260 216

they sell for $260 in the US

yeah it was fair as it showed stock cards as well.

I do agree that the AA performance sure does look to keep up with or beat ATI, but it would be nice to see more than 1 review doing 8xAA benches.

I wonder how the ATI refresh will turn out..the 48xx series weak point is clock speeds. Above 800-850 these cards REALLY REALLY fly....if ATI can release some cards that OC to over 900 I think they will take back the crown that I admit they are losing to Nvidia at the moment.

would a 260 f.t.w. automatically be a 216 card even if it doesn't say so?

(not that I know what any of this means lol)

Cheers,

G
