Grand Theft Auto 4

really enjoying this so far (about 4hr in), only complaint i have is that the gfx aint too great (Cant push past medium settings), Im pretty sure that a substancial patch should fix most issues..

I've come to the conclusion that the game is utter balls, and that it was a complete waste of money.

It runs like arse, the game was just lifted straight off the console with no effort to make it PC based at all, and as a result just doesn't work. I get random crashes when saving, loading, or even trying to just exit benchmark mode. The controls are just mind-bendingly retarded (for example, there is a button to bring out your phone, but NOWHERE is there any way of mapping which button puts the damn thing away again).

The camera pans too slowly when driving, and the whole running around thing feels so detatched I might as well be controlling a stringed puppet.

Then there is the whole "OMG the music just plain sucks!!!!"

So, GTA:VC remains as the best GTA by miles then.

wow! well PC gaming (bar mmo's, the sims and a few select others) really is dieing :(

I am at a loss for words how they can have shipped this. I really dont understand what they expected would happen.

It's just rubbish, absolutely rubbish. A great game ruined.

THE GRAPHIC SETTINGS OF GRAND THEFT AUTO IV PC

Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.

Graphics settings are limited by system resources by default. 256MB video cards force minimum settings by default. If a user bypasses these safety measures using command line arguments and exceeds their system resources, the users gaming experience may be compromised.

Video Mode
Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory.

Texture Quality
Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users.

Render Quality
Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute.

View Distance
View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions.

Detail Distance
Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory.

Vehicle Density
Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance

Shadow Density
Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance.

Crossfire/SLI
With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)
SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver.

NOTE: Background Processes
Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans when running the game to maximize performance.

Ooooh :D I'm impressed by that post from Rockstar.

You need a 1GB card to play the game maxed out. Really want to buy this and test it out now. I'll wait untill they sort SLI out.

It sounds like a disaster - I can't remember any game, especially a major title like this, attracting such widespread problems and condemnation.

Given Rockstar's track record I'm not holding my breath for a significant patch either.

Meh. I wonder if Steam will give a refund if it's this bad. Apparently some people have got refunds from Steam for this game.

is this a wind up? where's Jeremy Beadle?

I think the point he was trying to convey was that the PC doesn't offer any games that the other platforms offer other than crysis, whereas the consoles have many games that the PC doesn't.

What he has overlooked however is that the games that the PC shares with the consoles the PC typically, i say typically as this title clearly doesn't follow the trend, runs games better than the consoles. Thus giving the PC a rather large appeal that the consoles lack.

managed to log into the social club ok now and that's sorted the mma10 error out so far im quite impressed the performance is ok on my pc apart from not being able to push it past the medium setting, but thats down to having 512mb on my gfx card as im aware.

Any idea how to solve the fatal error when logged into social club? I've tried logging out then back in but it has not helped.

Have you downloaded the latest GFWL software?

That fixed it for me, granted it ended up being the least of my worries, but still...

Not read the last er 4 pages so bear with me.

How is it a great game? I and quite a few others stated that the game was rather dull from the outset with stale boring missions throughout and no where near the quality as the previous versions. Yet PC gamers for some reason seem to think that uber graphics will make the game magically great.

I tried to tell so many of my mates not to get hyped up over the pc version as I predicted a crap load of bugs and issues from the moment it went live. They were were "yeah the pc version will look so much better lol". Received 5 texts today with them already slating it. I didn't even know the game was already out tbh?

Tbh I wouldn't get your hopes up about MP either. Its fun for about an hour...

I know one thing... You never predicted the crap frame rate on everyones rigs and not being able to run it maxed....
