Grand Theft Auto 4

This has gone from the biggest / most awaited game of the YEAR to the biggest fail of the year.

I fail to see how it is that they can get the 360 version working well, the PS3 version working well, but give us retarded stuff on the PC ... such as R* Social Club (there is no way in hell I'm installing this on my PC), such as forcing us to have WMP installed .. such as SecureROM breaking stuff.

I'm half tempted to simply go buy the 360, mod it and get GTA for it ... simply because the PC version is NOT working properly.

I've not been signed into Social Club (as per my earlier post) and have had no problem with the Autosave on finishing a mission or Manual save at the fleapit...

Go figure!

Installed, crashes laptop when running the benchmark, a shame as it was running very well at 1680x1050. Ive uninstalled it and will wait until SLI support and a few patches come out for it.

Its trying to get me to sign up for Windows Live to save which I really shouldn't have to do!

I've got the game running great, no massive problems. Trouble is the water is either a very wobbly mirror, or it's distorted in straight lines. Here's an example of both happening together:

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Yes it seems you *must* have a Windows Live account even if you don't plan on using the feature.

Even though I'd already set one up for the XBox, as I said GTA IV wouldn't start until I downloaded and installed the latest Live software (30Mb).

I dread to think how anyone still on dial-up would cope with getting GTA IV running!

While the game is now up and running reasonably for me, you have to ask why R* have insisted on all this mandatory extra junk to run the game. Are they secretly hoping to garner such negative reviews, they can use it as an excuse to discontinue PC game development? They are certainly not engaging in a very positive manner with the end user.

As an aside, presumably even console games are coded on the PC, just optimised later for the dedicated system concerned.

As a further aside, I had forgotten SR2 coming out next year. I think I will be looking forward to that a bit more now!

My monitor (Dell 2405fpw) is 1920x1200 native, I've got a HD4870 512mb. Would it be best to sacrifice some of the graphics settings for the native res? Cause if I run at 1650x1080, I can ramp the options up. According to the game, it takes another 110mb of vid card mem to goto 1920x1200, which puts me right on the limit.

That is really poor in my oppinion. There is no reason why you should be forced to sign up for two different things online to play the game in single player.

I hate having to sign up for unnecessary things!

Hey guys, um I just spent the whole day downloading at my gf's, made a backup for my gaming rig and now I'm home and the backup didn't work =p so have to download everything again

This is something I've wondered about myself lately. It is almost as if these game companies are engaged in a self fulfilling prophecy of killing off PC gaming for good.

The DRM here is ridiculous. But this is how it will go.... The sales/customer reactions will be dissapointing. R* will eventually come out and proclaim piracy is to blame and they have had enough with the PC platform, etc. No more PC games from us, PC gamers are such a miserable/dishonest lot.

As for performance. There is an overreaction I feel. The game engine used clearly can't churn out amazing graphics at high settings on top end rigs. Especsially an openworld/sandbox enviroment like this. Medium is obviously the one that is recommended for current mid-high end PCs, and is still superior to the console versions in every respect.

The graphics situation kind of reminds me of the Flight Simulator franchise. Every 2 or 3 years a new version comes out and everyone screams blue murder that it runs terrible....because people turn the graphics sliders to max (they can't help themselves). It's always a couple of years before hardware properly catches up for them to get a smooth gaming experience with most things maxed.

Be interesting to know how many copies they sold this week (I reckon ££££ loads!!) as their servers are getting hammered and cannot cope with all the traffic at the moment which is why I think the social club is not working properly as they underestimated demand & need to ramp up the bandwidth to cope. Still advertising it on national TV as well which nowadays for the PC version is rare so reckon this will be a big consistent seller in the next 3 weeks as well.
