Hey All,

I have been trying for the last couple of months to get into London for work and away from Southend (So not too bad of a commute). Now I am getting knocked back mainly due to lack of experience; I left Uni 2 years ago but stayed on at my current job, just moving internally. I have been very successful internally however and gone up 7K in just over 1 year and jumped 2 bands of the hierarchy.

I have recently had a phone call from my Manager with a job offer of another Band increase and a jump of 5K in wage to just over £25K. However this Band level means you can't claim for overtime (the company bought out overtime from this Band and above years back, was all agreed by the Union and things) - obviously they're are other benefits in place of overtime, but none that really interest me!

But I am torn between taking this position or still trying to move to London (but worried about the current state of affairs of jobs coming and going and the fact it could mean another year before I have enough experience). Do both I hear you say... well the Manager in question has been highly supportive of me over the last 18months and has been a god send, and it is role supporting her and if I get it and move after a few months it wont go down well. Discussing it with her she said if I still want to go London then don’t go for it because she needs someone that will be able to support her long term (her long term is 12months+), I advised it would certainly keep me there for another 12-18months (credit crunch crisis should be more "settled" by then in terms of jobs I think) and it increases my experience even more.

So I am very tempted by it, just wanted an external view!

Oh and before you say “Loyalty is nothing, just do it” I am not that type of person especially when someone has really helped me with opportunities and person issues in the past!

I can see you point on loyalty but whichever way you look at it, you will break it.
If you accept the job - are you really going to stop looking for jobs in London? If you subsequently find a good job in London, are you really going to turn it down and stay with your manager? I doubt it. You dont know what may turn up in the next 12 months. Loyalty lost.
If you dont take the job and leave - Loyalty lost.
If you dont have anything lined up in London, take the job, dont think about the loyalty - that goes out the window if anything was to happen in this economic climate. Think about how loyal employees may have been up until cuts need making in companies on the news. Its what you want, not loyalty. Speaking from personal experience!
If you go to London, have you factored in annual costs and expenses in comparision to the 5K increase you will get?
If you stay and then find another job in London, you can renegotiate another increase to stay...

Some very good points there, to be honest the position im in now i dont like which has motivated me to move to London, but what she is offering is much more my cup of tea and i am likely to enjoy it, if that is the case then yes i may stop looking in London. I think i will take the job and keep my options open and unless something amazing is offered in London with a healthy pay package stay where i am. The Band increase offers a lot more opportunities in the company i work for anyway - and they way they are going it could be a company worth staying with!

So why the hell do you want another job? :s

Because i have worked for the company for 6 years now (albet it 4 of those part time while at College / Uni) and feel like going elsewhere! I have a few friends working in London who go on about the atmosphere and life up there and have always said thats my end goal. I am only 23 so got a lot of working life infront of me i know, but essentially i want more money - clear my Uni Debts and start saving for things

i do work for them, but trust me - it is not easy to climb! I have been lucky and worked my bum off to get where i am at the moment! Especially for my age - but i get considerably harder!!

23 - Plenty of room for movement still. Its when you get no more directions upwards or sideways and you no longer have a challenge that you start to rethink the situation.

Depending how the economy carries out job stability is more important than job mobility.

I turned down a job offer with more pay and a company car recently with a major reason being job stability at my present employer.

Look to move on. Don't get stale sitting in with one company - six years is a long time, life's too short for that. You're young, work in London and live it up a little. Southend doesn't compare.

Go for the job at your current place for the additional money but make no promises to her about staying on for at least 12 months.

I'm still shocked that someone employed you.

In the current climate If you think this job has 12-18 months security in it and you have no need for additional income I'd think about taking this job offer.

If nothing else its another level of experience and as you said you are only 23. The more experience the better.

Don't be fooled by the promise of London. You work for a company that operates all over the UK including London anyway, you're in a fantastic position for your age and you're risking a relationship you've built over 6 years for a stab in the dark.

You do realise that 25k for a 23 year old is above the national average? Not only that but you're moving up, and you're in a very secure company with a very secure future.

Only throw away what you have if the potential for advancement is gone. My advice would be to simply stop thinking about moving and getting yourself to a position where you need to move first. Keep working your ass off and keep reaping the benefits, don't throw it away.

One of my friends started at barclays as a clerk, worked her ass of and is now a director earning a base salary in 6 figures with bonuses to match.

Why not stay where you are and then try to get a transfer to London in a few years when your due for the next promotion.

What is your job title and what are you doing at the moment? Do you enjoy what you're doing and do you feel there is clear career progression?
