Recession.... companies making excuses!

My company refuse to pay forours we have to fund it ourselves but apparantly ive been like tht for a few years now..

Ive only been there for 6th months.

To be honest I never really like work parties, just because I work with people doesn't mean I want to socialise with them.

I find it's a nice way to let people unwind and break down barriers. We had a Christmas do last night and I got to speak to people I never normally would need to. I got home at 4am and am still feeling the consequences. ;)

Tomorrow night is the missus works do as well!

Despite record profits this year due to the "Difficult financial markets" we are losing 40% of our IT staff. Most are contracters, but my team is being cut from 8 to 6, I will find out in the new year if I am to be one of them.

They aren't however cutting the Christmas party :)

I've got a christmas meal next saturday evening, we all had to pay £15, but I suppose thats fair enough. I work at Bennetts (East anglian electrical retailer) Just glad I got the job at end of september in the first place really!

At work we dont have the free christmas dinner and no hamper this year either. The hampers were pretty awesome tbh most cost a fortune! Wasnt cheap stuff in them either all sainsburys taste the diff range (not the most expensive I know but still). And they gave them to almost 5000 employees :o

Im ok with it though as it helps them cut costs which we need at the mo.

Our big do's were cancelled last year (I think the excuse was given was that it would make the people who were being made redundant at the time feel bad ... although the affected people we spoke to were all leaving voluntarily and would have like a nice party at the companies expense$)

No idea what's going on this year, I don't go to the big do's only the local unofficial team ones ...

Ours is going ahead, fully paid inc transport and drinks all night & pocket money for club/casino after.

We've had a great year, won some really nice business off big players.

We are having ours but the company is making a few redundancies early next year (credit crunch reason and restructuring reasons). Thanks goodness I am not in the list, but it is bad. I wish they werent having one for respect to the people that are losing their jobs.

My company just gives everyone £30 and they do what they want with it. Curry and beerio's tomorrow night. Sweet.

On the flip side my boss asked the other day 'whether any one could think of any way that we could work out of hours without getting paid overtime'
Funnily enough, no one could think of any...:p

Fortunately for me, people will always need gas and electricity - and energy companies will always need IT kit to run it all on. That's where I come in...;)

That surely depends on the reasons for the redundancies.

We have made redundancies in the last month or so, but they were for restructuring purposes (making the departments we have more efficient, removing brands that were not making a profit even though the company as a whole IS).

Redundancies can be a preventative measure as well as a knee-jerk reaction.

I have just moved jobs from somewhere where nothing was put on at christmas and with no reason or thanks, no christmas bonus etc. to somewhere who has christmas get togethers in place and paid for.

It does make a difference, even if you don't want to go to the office do at least it is a more positive feeling to have your company make an effort and I feel it helps morale and gives something to look forward to for many.

We were out on wed night for a pre-xmas do night out 3 course meal and champers paid for.

Proper do is on the 19th. Should be sweet as they even cover taxis home :D

Big christmas party tomorrow as always. £25 quid a head for whatever we want. :D

Still getting a nice crimbo meal at work and we got to pick our own gifts this year from a big booklet aswell. w00t

We have a summer party instead of an Xmas do. Warmer, lighter, more fun and the girls can really dress up.

Christmas is done on a departmental basis - we're limited this year to just a meal out - whatwever goes on after that is self-funded.

More than generous enough.
