Grand Theft Auto 4

Oh yeah baby modding is now possible as someone figured a way around the file hash check system. :)

Im gona try mod the gfx so its less of a strain. Heres my first mod attempt just to see if anything changed and yep it did. Sry for the image if it hurts ** eyes a bit.

This is fiddling about with a few values in visualsettings.dat (the xls file does nothing when u fiddle with it)

Changed

misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.HD 1
misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.SD 0.5

to

misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.HD 10
misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.SD 10

Runs ok here, not great but perfectly playable, 35-50fps..

Settings, High/Highest, 31/100/1/50, keeping view distaince down to stay under 1GB memory usage and the shadows looks like crap, this is at 1920*1200 with a GTX280.

Could you try playing around with the reflections? There was some limited evidence to suggest they were causing a lot of peoples slowdowns.

@alexhull24

Tryed but did nothing the values when i put them down.

I tweaked some blur settings and stuff duno if it looks better or not, fps about same tho. Tell me if it looks less jaggy.

Penski? :p

Its a small hope, but on another forum GTA related they have a Rockstar guy on there saying that they can see how badly people want AA and are looking into it, who knows. In defence of RS, i would say that ATI and Nvidia could have worked harder at getting these drivers out, they help a lot out with performance from what ive seen and my own experience with the 8.12 R3's. I wonder if there would have be some much vented frustration if the drivers had been out a couple of weeks ago ?

Rockstar Toronto or something on GTA Forums?

Well I have CAT8.12 now and am downloading GTA4 finally so will update later on how it runs with these!

all well and good saying that, but if Rockstar don't give the game to ATi or Nvidia, not a lot that can do about that. Considering, from memory, Bioshock, Crysis, errm, actually thats the big ones, theres deffo been more, both companies have had hotfixes to sort out graphical glitches and often boost performance in the days before a release, so both companies have pretty much proven that given a little help they can infact get drivers sorted. Both companies being late says to me, R* were late giving it to them and based on memory amounts being used, and performance, complete lack of stability, it wasn't exactly an easy optimisation for either company.

Lets be honest, most of us have computers setup that blow away a PS3/Xbox, bad ports can cause games to not run great but, Assasins Creed, amongst dozens of other games have been ported across with basically no issues what soever. All that add's up, to me at least, to say that R* are the ones that massively screwed the pooch here, not that they are PC's, not ATi, not Nvidia, not the need for a quad core. The fact that they did a woeful job.

Oh ffs .

Lazy ignorant R* ********.
I hope they add dx10 then...

What I'm wondering about though is this comment :
Don't think so....

There was this Pre-Release-Testversion used by many games magazins that HAD AA!!!!! I don't know for what reason R* don't want us to use it, but it was there. And it worked. Simply watch the screenshots that were made with these Testversion.

A german magazin published a screenshot of the options screen (can't find the link), it had more tweaks than the retail actual has. And one option was Anti Aliasing.

If this is true why have the ***** removed it again, it is one of the most important options in any game, give me no shadows lowres textures anything, as long as I have smooth models....

I'm pretty sure they'll add AA eventually. Saying you can't have AA in DX9 though is quite terrible. I think it's because of the way the renderer works. *shruggs shoulders*

Guys on the XP vs Vista row. I installed it on my Vista and it crashed on launch. I installed it on Xp and it crashed on launch. Managed to get it working another way using a no-cd crack I have the game legit so i feel i should be able to use this as i've no intention of selling the game on and if i didn't apply the crack it still wouldm't be working.

I'm about 8/9 hours into the missions and loving them. My rig isn't the best but it runs fine. The inly problem for me is the draw detail when i'm on the highway going fast.
