Getting A Rator, Would I Notice A Difference?

Price per GB is going back to the year 2000 for normal drives. They're still way too expensive for me to consider, mainly due to the onset of SSDs.

Is there different models of the 300GB raptor? As im looking on a well know auction site and there cheaper than on overclockers site, so just woundering if there was an older model batch of the raptors?

The VelociRaptor is the latest model, and there are a few different incarnations of it; there's the normal one, one for hard disk caddys/servers and one without the 3.5 caddy. You want the WD3000GLFS.

I got mine from that famous auction site for £169 which was a bargain, but I'm not too sold on it. I think there's a reason why no other hard disk manufacturer has released a competitor; these drives might appear to be fast but realistically the 1GB Samsung SpinPoint F1 is nearly as quick, costs half the price and has three times the amount of storage.

I've just gone from 2xRaptorX in Raid 0 to 1x300Gb VelociRaptor.

The new VelociRaptor is much quieter than the previous Raptors and feels as quick if not a little quicker in real world apps. Also they run cooler, 24c down from 34c on the Raptor X.

Yes, they are pricey per GB by todays standards, but if you can afford them they're well worth it.

Do i need to get the more expensive backplane version (WD3000HLFS) or can i just get the standard (WD3000GLFS) version to go in a standard 3.5" bay?? Also do i need any special software or hardware for the VelociRaptor, i WONT be using RAID at all!, Just have the Raptor for windows, apps & games and my old WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA-II 16MB for downloads?

I take it the ones that Overclockers stock wouldnt be early models?? How would the 150GB HD be better for my system? than the 300GB HD? I didnt think the amount of platters a HD had effected its speed (1,2 or 6 the performance would be the same?), but i believed it is the density of the platter that effects performace??

The 300GB with no backplane is an older model (I cant say if they have now updated Firmware or not).

You can use SEARCH and my Nick and find out all about the Backplane model inc Photos.

You just explained you only need the Prim HDD for Window/apps and games, well IMO 150GB is enough.

Ah ok, so theres no difference in performance between the 'Backplane' 150GB & 300GB drivers then? So the Backplane editions are better performers than the standard??

The Backplane is to fit server type hotswap bays (either works on a Desktop PC).

The older Firmware (only on some 300GB's as 150Gb and 74GB were not released) is slower then the newer firmware (again I posted reviews here on this).

Am thinking about getting a , Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB, i currently have a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA-II 16MB. What sort of performance increase would i see, would vista, apps and games load much quicker, or isnt it worth splashin out £200?. The raptor woudl have vista, apps and games, and just keep my old 500gb for downloads and stuff.

to be honest here if you have to post asking if you shoudl get a raptor then its not the drive for you to get. those who get a raptor will know before hand the reasons for wanting such a drive and dont need to post a thread on here regarding it. its best you stick to the regular drives since if you knew what a raptor was all about then you would have purchased it already without having to ask the question on the forum.

If space isn't much of an issue, dont bother.

You could get a 60GB OCZ 'Core V2' SSD for £150 if you look around... dont bother with the cheapo and slower OCZ 'Solid Series' that OCUK sell though.

My V2 is faster than my WD VelociRaptors. And SSD's scale way better than HDD's for RAID 0 if you ever got another one...

I was actually asking what the performance is like, what peoples views are on them, and if they are worth the upgrade in regards to, price to performance raito!....idiot

well next time use the search function and there are plenty of reviews out there already on raptor drives. i stand by my statement if you have to ask questions about the raptor drive then its not the drive for you. stick to your everyday 5400rpm - 7200rpm stuff pal.

Got my 2 raptors now, and been looking at some reviews and they all say that the drives are a lot quiter out of their 'Icepacks', if i remove the drives from the icepack does this viod all warranty on the drives?? Heat shouldnt be an issue as they will be going in my new Antec 1200 case which has fans on the front of all the drive bays so will be getting a constant airflow over the drives. Any suggestions for a 3rd party harddrive mount, i see the, NoVibes III HDD Decoupling Rack gets good reviews, is there any better??

I take it you mean Drives (not drivers).

I do not get how its louder in the Icepack, that site may have had vibrations in their PC case etc, who knows.

YES, You do void the warranty talking it out the of Icepack and it runs hotter (There is 1 tamper proof screw out of the 4 so you will be caught).
