Dexter Morgan - Hero or Villain?

murderer who kills innocent people? (arguable innocence has nothing to do with it past mob justice)

Sounds like a villain to me.

"a wicked or evil person; someone who does evil deliberately"

I say he's not a villain because he knows what he is and tries to counter-act it, he's not comfortable with his demons. I think a Villain would be.

So killing people, but feeling a bit bad afterwards is fine?

The act of killing repeated rules out the act of remorse. even though he clearly doesn't feel any as he knows full well turning him self in would force him to stop killing. He does not struggle with his demons he has embraced them to improve his own at the cost of others.

Kill or be killed, who comes out innocent in that situation?

Deliberately hunting down people to murder them is not "kill or be killed".

oh and the innocent would be the wrong guy he butchered i would assume, if you're the attacker you can hardly claim kill or be killed/self defence can you.

I didn't say it was fine lol, I just said that by definition it wouldn't make you a villain, just twisted and a bit sick in the head. Which Dexter admittedly is, as he has said.

except most people would consider murder as evil, and he does do it willingly, he even admits he enjoys it

also villain is mainly a term for a characters role rather than a real concept, so he fits pretty much every possible definition.

Well no, in which case he would almost definitely not be the 'villain' character. That's not what he's portrayed to be.

And I didn't say he wasn't evil, we were talking about the term villain.

I like how the ID card threads result in people claim "OMG judge dread future" yet someone who is pretty much as close as possible to judge dread only less badass, if glorified.

It's a need for him, like you need food.

I don't think murder is evil, it's a question of perspective.

What is war? State sanctioned murder.

What are executions? State sanctioned murder.

If you wanted to get really silly, you could argue killing animals for food is murder.

Where do you draw the line?

At best you can wrangle anti-hero, but he's not really depicted as a hero.

right and the definition you gave was
"a wicked or evil person; someone who does evil deliberately"
Yet now you're saying he is evil but not in a way that fits the definition "and evil person" :/

The thing is though I suppose you could argue that Dexter is technically mentality ill, so that does put another spin on it tbh, remember what he went through as a baby/young child and what he witnessed, I'm not saying it excuses what he does, but I'm not sure I could class him as evil considering his history and how that may of helped engineer his current psychological mindset.

To me the defining point between evil and villain was the 'doing evil deliberately', being evil doesn't qualify being a villain. A villain is a typecast, one which Dexter doesn't fit.

I didn't say he wasn't evil, but I wouldn't say he was either. Dexter has conflicts, like we all do. Evil people don't have conflicts.

Not a physical need it isn't it's like my need to play games I like it but don;t have to do it.

If he;s locked in a cell, he wont die of withdrawal.

Yeah which is why most countries find anything other than a war of efense to be a crime/very bad thing.
What are executions? State sanctioned murder.

After a trial and evidence, + appeal + numerous other safeguards against the loss of innocent life.

Also Most people doin;t agree with it either, thats why it doest;t exist here. Just cause you add "state sanction" does not change it;s moral position, nly it;s legal one.

If you wanted to get really silly, you could argue killing animals for food is murder.

Only if you're an incredible retard.

Where do you draw the line?

At self defence or the defence of another against an imminent danger.

He does do evil deliberately he puts an incredible amount of planning and forethought into it, it's not a spur of the moment thing so yes he does do evil deliberately.

Evil people don't have conflicts.

They do, they just make the choice to do the evil option. Good people don;t keep thier victims blood as trophies.

Have you seen the episode?

Yet it he is mentally sound enough to understand this, as such he's stable enough to commit himself. He does not chose to but chooses to put lives at risk for his own pleasure.

Nope, was going on what was posted, I find the show pretty crap tbh.

Ah right, just that it's in no way as straight forward as that post made it sound so it's pretty hard to have a sensible argument about it without me posting horrendous spoilers.
